There are men's strip clubs too. Usually they are busier then the women's strip clubs. If I remember right Friday night or Saturday night at Parkway Tropics is male dancers becuase it draws more business.

It's very hard to degrade men. It's one of the fundamental differences between the sexes.

I don't think its hard per say, but I think its more a matter of, its not as big a deal to guys that Male strippers exist because men feel if we get to have this kind of entertainment, its only fair the women do too!

From Street Talk in the GRBJ

Best quote from [GR City Commission Member] Tormala: "The mayor's Wi-Fi initiative is going to bring more smut into this city than Mark London will."

What district does he represent? I wanna join his reelection campaign! The guy sounds like a hoot!

If strip clubs were even minutely degrading to men, there would be no strip clubs. . period.
Couldn't you say the same thing about women?: "If strip clubs were even minutely degrading to women, there would be no strip clubs. . period." Women are not forced to work at the clubs.

I agree with hood and francishsu - men are being degraded in those places. There is a good deal of schmoozing of the clientele by the female employees in order to extract their money. Perhaps the men do it willingly, but the women do aswell when they choose that profession...

After thinking a lot about the poll here, I have come to the exciting non-position of "I don't care". At least at this juncture, I cannot say that I give a crap either way. For the record, I voted "for", but it its really "for, sort of, but I don't really care either way" :D

That is such a stupid statement I don't have anything to say in response to it (which is unusual). I tried to come up with something clever but I can't...

How is it stupid? The point was made quite a while back that strip clubs are degrading to men as well as to women. . . I found that completely absurd. Men are sitting back being entertained by women with little or no clothes on . . . who is being degraded here . . . . . please.

Well, which of the two is succumbing to a lower brain function? Which one tries to go in through a discreet back door out of fear of being seen? Which one is probably in jeopardy of losing their marriage, and which one is probably forthright with family members/friends/loved ones as to what they are doing? Based on that, now who is the "empowered" one and who is the degraded sucker?

I don't think men are degraded in strip clubs. I don't think women are degraded in strip clubs.

Like it or not, society is changing and we are losing some of our Puritan roots. Strip clubs are no longer taboo to MANY people. Overt sexuality and nudity are more commonplace today and it is not because our country is going into the dumps. We are finally becoming more moderate like our European cousins (though you wouldn't think it from some of the stuff going on these days). Just because you don't like it doesn't mean it shouldn't exist.

Good point Joe. American's have huge hang ups on sex compared to the Europeans. When I was 15 I went to Europe for the first time. It was quite a shock to a suburbanite teenager about how open the Europeans are with sex.

Any newstand you go to has as many pornographic mags on full display as news magazines. You can walk through a shopping district and see a sex shop mixed in with boutique retailers. You'd be amazed at the very interesting adult toys on full display right in the front window.

The closest thing I've seen to this in the US is Bourbon St. in NOLA.

After some thought its clear to me, "follow the money" is pretty accurate.

atleast the city isn't using my refund money... cause if they were I'd be down there so fast and raising plenty of hell.

If you look at the definition of degrading in any dictionary, it's clear that many male customers who frequent strip clubs can be degraded. It sounds like you have a different definition of degrading. Take gambling. I find that the person who spends all day in front of a slot machine mindlessly feeding it is being degraded. Same with drug usage. Your are engaging in activity to keep your dopamine levels high, at the expense of other things that should matter in life.

But is it society's job to protect us humans from being degraded?

What about personal responsibility?

Just because I have the opinion that strip clubs can be degrading to all the participants should not be taken to mean that I support the ban. I actually do not support the ban, especially when the city's support for it is apparantly so weak that they need a special interest group to avoid having to build public support.

I agree about the personal responsibility in this case, especially since people have to actually make some effort to seek them out. Nobody's being bombarded with advertising or other forms of pressure to go to one.

Anybody know when London's new joint is officially open? I know he's got some odd hours right now, but when is the project supposed to be complete? When is the Grand Opening? (I realize that the last question opens up the potential for some decent humor).

It will be interesting to see if there are demonstrations/picketing that goes on.

Lawsuit Filed.

Let the games begin:

I found this part to be interesting:

24 Hour News 8 also has a copy of the letter that the Michigan Decency Action Council has sent to the city of Grand Rapids. The group has promised to pay at least $90,000 from a private anonymous source to pay the city's legal fees. The letter outlines what that source is demanding before giving that money out.

I'd like to see a copy of this letter. :)
