FLASH: Another strong mayoral aspirant announces his candidacy:

http://www.inrich.com/cva/ric/news.apx.-co...06-06-0238.html

That's the best news I have read all day! I wonder if Wilder will leave it up to the next Mayor to pick the police chief or if he will do it.

BTW, what in the heck is up with all the smoke and fire smell today? I woke up in northside and it was there. Dropped my daughter off at school in the museum area, it was there. Went to Midlothian, it was there, then went to Hanover, it was still there.

A huge forest fire in Eastern North Carolina is the source of the smoky smell. Here's the story from today's inRich:

A day before Monroe's departure for Charlotte, Mayor Wilder has named Colonel David M. McCoy from within the RPD as Interim Police Chief of Richmond.

http://www.inrich.com/cva/ric/news.apx.-co...06-12-0205.html

Also, the second homicide of the month was recorded as a young 14 year old middle school student was shot in the East End. I believe that brings the year-to-date number of murders to 20.

I read about 14 year old's murder. From what I read, it was due to some sort of arguement with thw shooter.

What is the number for this time last year?

This story got no traction when I posted it last evening in Richmond Development thread. Maybe it will get tossed around here.

I wanted to leave it alone. I might apply for that position for the next mayor. Maybe get someone in there with some design sense and no pre-concieved notion of how to run a government.

I think that between Beschler and Black, they pretty much have it covered. The post should be eliminated in my opinion.

A lot of folks around the office are talking about how she is resigning because she cannot handle being in the Wilder administration. I tend to believe that in the next couple of days, Obama will announce that Tim Kaine is his running mate and I believe that Hill-Christian will be joining the campaign.

This past Fridays after sunset series featured Jill Scott and was at Hovey Field on the campus of Virginia Union University. The crowd was quite large and completely surprised the entire neighborhood. Nothing but good things to report on this concert. The crowd was friendly and nice, the sound system was fantastic, the performers were top-notch. All in all, I believe this event at this location, went off without a hitch.

What made it even better was that it was the same night as the first Fridays.

Shifty Carl Rove took Richmond to task yesterday on Face The Nation. In his put down of a former mayor he said Richmond is the 105th American city in population citing such metropolises as Chula Vista, CA, Aurora, CO and Gilbert, AZ as outstripping Virginia's capital. "It's not a big town," said he.

Yesterday, Joe Macenka did a story in the RTD about population shifts in Central Virginia. Richmond, it seems, has gained 7,000 inhabitants since 2000. Do you suppose its National ranking has decreased or increased?

How sad. Losing out to those historic and well known Western cities of Chula, Aurora and Gilbert!

His statement wasn't entirely correct (not surprising). Richmond is in fact larger than some of those cities named.

Like Henrico and Chesterfield, those "suburbs" of San Diego, Denver and Phoenix are spill-overs from cities considerably larger than Richmond.

Ok this is state government, but I'd like a second go at this debate. I am tired of seeing people wearing their pants so low you wonder why wear pants at all? Why glorify the jail inmate? It's amazing how homophobic the drug dealers and others are yet they're wearing their clothes in the "I'm ready" position male inmates use as a signal to other male inmates. I've seen way too many guys with their pants down to their knees literally with everything hanging out. It's not free speech, it's public decency. You can't have sex in public. You can't be nude in public. Why should people be allowed to give sneak peeks? Ban the saggy pants.

New Police Chief Norwood, like most people, is not a stranger to controversy.

He was hired as Chief of Police in Bridgeport in 2006 at a salary of $102,793. The range for Richmond's Chief is $109,762 to $165,424. Monroe received the latter amount before leaving for Charlotte, but the inRich story does not reveal what Norwood has been offered to take over the vacant Richmond post.

Thanks to D_C for the above posting of Chief Norwood's bio.
