I know the government outsources too, which is a shame.

The average Joe works hard and does not become wealthy. It's hard to save when you're taxed more than those who are wealthy. Rich people can afford to give a little bit more than what they're paying now. It's not going to hurt them or make them poor. Giving them freebies and such a low tax rate is welfare for the rich. Just give them more money while the rest of us are given less of a chance to make it. This country is supposed to be about opportunities but equal opportunities don't exist under this system. The wealthy are not supposed to think like Leona Helmsely who said, "We don't pay taxes. Only the little people pay taxes." They should not climb the ladder and set it on fire once they've made it to the top. They should help make it easier for everyone to get up that ladder. It seems like CEOs and upper management take 99% of profits and pay only 1% to whoever they employ... that's not the actual math, but it feels that way. Personally, if I ever became a billionaire for whatever I did, I would gladly pay more in taxes and if I were the top of my company, if we're making a lot of money, the employees would see it. I wouldn't take anything away from them. We'll all do well together, why should I take it all and leave nothing for the employees so they'll continue to struggle? That's why they're working, to also chase that dream that Republicans talk about but don't want people to actually get. "But don't forget that most men with nothing would rather protect the possibility of becoming rich than face the reality of being poor. And that is why they will follow us to the right, ever to the right never to the left, forever to the right." - John Dickinson from 1776. Not this time.

As far as unions go, really? Let's let big corporations treat their employees any way they want. This goes back to repealing the 13th Amendment. Don' t think they have not thought of lobbying to do that. Slavery was a good thing for businesses in the past... free labor, and you could work people any kind of way. Why not let big business trample people's right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness?

Answer:

Because they didn't do what you did to become a billionaire!!! If you ever become a billionaire, there is no way in hell you are going to pay your employees a ton of money when they didn't earn it (in other words, you're not just going to give them a "hand out" just because they work for you), if you did, you'd be broke and you'd no longer be a billionaire! Most rich people worked their tails off to get where they are right now and the last thing they want the government to do is to take that away from them (now, does that seem fair?)! Why should I get a hand out from a millionaire, when I didn't earn it (I'd feel guilty taking it)??? I assure you that if you were a billionaire, you would probably give a lot of money to charity (which is a good thing and you should do it), but the government is NOT a charity and usually that money (from taxes) goes into the pockets of crooked people or, as in the case of what Obama wants to do, hand it out to poor who are likely not going to use it to become millionaires themselves, but rather will blow the money on a stereo system or flat screen TV. Now tell me where that helps the poor??!! Charities are organizations that help the poor (they know how to use the money in a useful way that is really helpful) not the government!!!

Here is an interesting story about how well President Elect Obama did in Virginia.

Northern Virginia and Hampton Roads went Democratic; Richmond, of course and even Henrico. Chesterfield, while still Republican, had a surprisingly large turnout of people wanting change. Only Southwest Virginia stayed overwhelmingly red.

That's absurd!!! So, God doesn't want us to meet our full potential and be successful? - WRONG! Besides, being rich is not a sin - nowhere in the Bible does it say that being rich was a sin. Now, there have been rich people who were sinful, but nowhere does it say that it is wrong to be rich! Rich people can certainly do a lot of good by helping others with the wealth that they have (and I'm sure God blesses those who have the means to give and who do give to others freely and by their own will). The government, on the other hand, wants to STEAL the money from rich people under the cloak of tax law and do, who knows what, with it (not all of the money goes to help those less fortunate as advertised, but like I said before, helping the less fortunate is the purpose of charities, not the government!).

Also, I regret that you feel that only 1% of billionaires have worked an honest day in their lives - WRONG AGAIN! That's a bogus stat and what is true is that most of them (not all, because you are right that some haven't worked an honest day in their lives) I repeat, most of them worked their tails off to get to where they are and now don't have to work! What you see is them not working and assume that they've never worked! They've learned to work smarter and not harder by this point and there's nothing wrong with that! That's what's so great about this country - isn't that the American Dream??? Since when was that wrong?? Since when did we ever want to suppress the American Dream? Sounds to me that your idea is rather anti-American. Most rich people don't want you to not be successful. Instead, they want that all be successful and achieve the American Dream too. I assure you that this is the case (granted, there might be a few out there who are evil because they are rich, but to be rich is not evil as long as you give to others graciously of your own free will and not be forced to do so - the enforcer at that point is the evil one).

You'll be happier when you change your settings to ignore Brent's postings, like I did.

As the saying goes the Poor will be poorer and the rich will get richer. Thats the way it works in this world. If you think the poor will be better off from the rich then that is a joke. It will never work.

Joey, that's not just a saying nor a fact of life; it's regarding the effects of Reaganomics in this country. That third sentence... can you clean that up so we can read it?

Eric, so you're saying my employees work hard but don't deserve being paid for it? They didn't earn it? I wouldn't be on the street handing out money. THAT is a hand-out; however, the people who work for me who are hard workers will be paid very well. This business also is pulling in a lot of money or I wouldn't have made it to billionaire status, so I can afford to give a little more and pay my fair share in taxes. Don't give me a tax cut because I'm rich. That is backwards and how the middle class is suffering now. So much has been cut and less is given to us while the rich get more and more for nothing. The middle class are the majority of the workers and the engine to this economy. If they have money, businesses do well. Give businesses themselves money to help them stay afloat, they go around and burn it on their upper management, then ask for more. That's how not to make business grow. It's the consumer who makes every one of our businesses and the majority of them are not rich. Republicans following the lemming of Reaganomics forget that.

Also Eric, be sure to read Mark 10:25 in your Bible. Jesus said... and let me do it like the King James version... "It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God." You also forget that GREED is a sin. Jesus, before saying the above, had told a rich man to sell all his possessions to the poor... wow that Jesus guy... what a socialist.

If the government steals money from the rich, then most assuredly it's stealing money from us normal folk. Oh wait, it is! If I work overtime, the government takes a huge chunk before I see it. What appeared to have been a lot of money after a lot of work, doesn't end up that way. Personally, I can work 7 days a week at 12 hours a day, giving my life and time to the company (and I have done that before although it was 6 days), and it would not make that much of a difference between working my normal hours. So how can I work hard and gain? I welcome a tax break. If you don't want one or think you don't deserve to have a break in your own taxes, follow Shakman to China.

Under the Bush Administration, the American Dream was dying. Did you see all the excitement around the country when Obama was elected? That wasn't because he was bi-racial, although history was part of it, but it was because hope was restored that the American Dream would be revived and the Constitution would be followed again. Ninety-three percent give or take of people in this country believed we were on the wrong path under Bush and the Republicans. What they did was not working for the majority of Americans. Now we'll be able to ensure that regular people, the power force of this country and our economy, won't have to worry about the American Dream slipping away.

Also more food for thought... it's not a coincidence the US became an economic power during the Progressive Era when the tax system was changed to favor working Americans. You know, all started by the REPUBLICAN Teddy Roosevelt. Oh and when his cousin got us out of the Great Depression with is oh-so threatening, radical social programs, the country did not fall apart. The rich stayed rich and under Obama, rest assured the rich will stay rich.

Here's some news that may have some of you grinding your teeth.

Others may be delighted.

Terry McAullife is seriously thinking of tossing his hat into the next Virginia Gubernatorial race.

From this afternoon's inRich:

That link's the Jones link. I don't know who Terry is.

Oooops, Sorry, Cam. I corrected it in my posting above and have also placed the story here. McAullife was on Larry King and other talk shows all but announcing his intent to succeed Tim Kaine as Governor. The man is personable but quite outspoken and I doubt he gets much traction with voters in the Commonwealth.

But continuing on the political theme, I bet a quarter Richmond is going to gain in many ways because of the strong ties between Gov. Kaine and the new administration.

Heya Burt! Get a chance to read the new edition of 'Why Richmond Why?!?' yet? ;)

Why do all of our flag polls lack flags? Is it too much to ask for a proportionally sized flag of our country, state or city to be flown on them? Flagpoles along the canal walk at the bottom of 5th Street and Tredegar Street and Kanawha Plaza contain a few flag poles that have rarely witnessed flags. Even at the Coliseum for the Obama rally, two giant flag poles stood motionless dead center at the 6th Street entrance to the Coliseum. I just don't get it … even when the city does put flags up, like it had for the Richmond Folk Festival, they were so tiny and disproportional they didn't look right. We're the capital city for goodness sake, let's show our colors!

-- Tommy

Michael Wallace, public information manager III for the City of Richmond office of the press secretary to the mayor, answers:

You are correct that the flags at some of these locations are not flying. For reference, they are flying at the set of poles on Canal at 5th and Tredegar Streets and have been for quite some time.

As for Kanwaha Plaza, the interior cable mechanisms that hoist the flags at this set of poles are deteriorated from age (the flag poles are 30 years old) and can not be restrung, as funding is not currently available to replace them. The poles themselves are sound.

Funding will be available next year for repairs to Kanwaha Plaza Park, which will include the repair and/or replacement of these poles.

Barring any unforeseen issues, the Coliseum flag poles will be flying the flag very soon. Coliseum staff was aware of the problem and ordered new, appropriately sized flags, but they have not arrived yet.

Hahaha. Thanks, Tommy. Are you the "Tommy" who posed the question to Why Richmond Why? I contacted them once about the naked flag poles and dry fountains but was ignored. Nice to know there are others who are not complacent about such things. :yahoo:

The House of Delegates' Republican majority has ammended the no-smoking-in-restaurants bill.

The Governor had negotiated with the opposition party leadership and passage of a pretty comprehensive non-smoking bill was anticipated.

Under the House ammendment, "smoking will be allowed in any establishment where minors are not present."

I did see that a vast majority passed a bill that would make it illegal to smoke in a vehicle when a minor is also in the vehicle. Even legislators that opposed the restaurant bill.

Although I oppose any legislation that would keep a business owner from running his/her own business, I do think that the no-smoking in vehicles with kids bill, warrants support.

I think they should ban that disgusting habit period.
