Just as I was giving up on this place (Shreveport-Bossier, not Urban Planet) some decent news comes out. There has been other news lately but I haven't felt like posting about it.

Anyway, the new Millennium Films studio is officially breaking ground today... literally feet from the scenes of multiple recent homicides.

Just one thing... the article calls this Shreveport's "first" movie studio. Perhaps it's the first major movie studio being built by a major film company, but we already have 3 or 4 movie studios around the city. So this technically isn't the first.

I hope they know what they are doing building it down there. Hopefully none of the out-of-towners get robbed or hurt down there. How bad would that be for us?

Mark my words: security will be tight. Have you ever seen security at the real Hollywood soundstages? I guarantee you this will be no different. This isn't Expo Hall renovated, this is a Hollywood-style soundstage being built from scratch. I'm not thinking it will really revitalize the area, but I feel that they will definitely keep their own safe. They can't afford to not be able to get workers.

Check it out. This is about an old bordello in Ledbetter Heights being burned down for an HBO series called "True Blood." According to The Times it is a...."series is about Sookie Stackhouse, a Louisiana barmaid who can read people

New York Times article on Shreveport's movie-making industry...

http://www.nytimes.com/2008/05/20/movies/2...amp;oref=slogin

You know, articles like this are great publicity, but the one thing I hate about them is that they are always somewhat degrading. I mean... it's not a huge place or anything, but they make it sound like Mayberry. Well, "post-boom" Mayberry. The oil boom ended in the early 80s and the place dried up, but it came back in the 90s and it's bigger and better than ever. We're now "post-casino boom" if they want to be honest about things. One thing they did touch on, which I've thought to post about here but have yet to, is the Haynesville Shell. Let me tell you, if this thing is as big as they say it is, then it will mean yet another "mineral" boom for us, bringing things back to the way they were during the oil boom. Seriously, this is supposed to be LARGEST gas field EVER discovered. What what!?!? This is what one might call a "HUGE" deal!!

I know sometimes these articles do give back-handed compliments, but I really didn't feel it out of this one. I thought it was great, especially coming from such a huge newspaper. I love seeing us getting national exposure!

I have been hearing about this gas field. It's the biggest ever??? I didn't know that. This could be huge for our us. I just wish that I had a piece of that land!

Don't get me wrong, I loved the article. I just feel they didn't do their best... they portrayed us as a post-oil boom "town" and mentioned nothing about the more recent casino boom or the fact that we're not a one-horse town. But those are things that always irk me, so most people probably wouldn't even have a problem with it. But the fact that the NY Times did a favorable article on us is huge. That's not a newspaper with 200,000-500,000 circulation... it's a paper with a circulation well into the millions.

Yes, the Haynesville Shale is supposed to be the largest gas field ever discovered in the world... larger than the one in Texas, which is currently considered the largest in the world.

And yes, I just realized I said Haynesville SHELL before. My bad. :)

Now THIS is a big deal. I've seen this 'Angels' stuff in the paper recently and just thought it was another Broadway show coming to the Strand, so I wasn't too impressed. But after hearing something about it on the radio this morning I decided to read the article. This is a new Broadway show being put together here in Shreveport, BEFORE it ever hits Broadway! They are taking advantage of the state's incentives even though this isn't a film. This is truly historic for Shreveport, for a brand new Broadway show to actually be assembled and everything in Shreveport before opening on Broadway. All I can say is, WOW!

I was gonna post that same NY Times article that was put in Business Report in BR late last week. Nice exposure for Shreveport ; looks like it's taking the title of Hollywood South. And then more impressive stuff that Brian posted above, WOW Shreveport has a really good thing going!

I heard it said Austin TX is trying to get into the movie-making business; but it having a hard time keeping up with the sweet incentives/deals that Shreveport/La. has. There are alot of copy-cat wanna-be's trying to takes 3rd Place title away from Louisiana.

I heard about the Haynesville shale deposits too. With all the negative all over the place it's good to see positive things happening in Louisiana! I always remember Haynesville for it's "power-house" HS football program!

We have some land in east of BR in Walker they were supposed to do some kind of test with natural gas??

Today, the wife and kids and I went to see Kung Fu Panda. It was pretty good, but what I wanted to say is they were playing the trailer for The Longshots. It looks pretty good too, but you could see Minden all in the trailer. I knew the football field right away and they even showed the Minden water tower. In the movie the football team is called the Minden Browns. I love seeing places I know in the movies they make here. I'll post a link to the website which automatically plays the trailer.

I have seen a couple of commercials on HBO for True Blood, both mention Shreveport. It looks pretty good. The Styx River Motel one is hilarious! They showed an exterior photo of the "Motel" on the commercial and it looked like they used that apartment complex at the corner of Texas and Hamilton. Am I right about that? Check out the commercial. RockyMount, your link to the youtube video didn't work, but if anyone wants to see it, all you have to do is search for Styx River Motel on youtube and you will find it.

His link worked just now when I clicked it. Funny stuff. I would say it's either the complex you mentioned or the Peters Apartments on Barksdale Blvd next to Peters Grocery. Both of those complexes have that same look.

All this looks cool... any word on when this series begins? Unfortunately I don't have HBO (I have a billion Cinemax channels instead) but I think I can find a way to see the series still.

This sure does sound exciting! Saw this in BR Business Report last Friday....Happened this past Monday!!!

I-49 section to close for Battle: Los Angeles filming

Part of Interstate 49 in Shreveport will be shut down next week for filming of Battle: Los Angeles. The southbound lane of I-49 from Murphy Street to the ramp at Interstate 20 will be shut down starting Monday for the movie. The interstate will be used to stage firefights between movie Marines and aliens from outer space. The shutdown will start Monday morning and is to last until Sept. 28. City officials have outlined what traffic engineer Michael Erland called a very simple detour that motorists will use during that time. Battle: Los Angeles will shoot in Baton Rouge this fall. The movie is set for release Feb. 18, 2011.

Shreveport film studio nears completion

The head of a new film studio being built in Shreveport says the studio is on track for a grand opening in February. The Nu Image/Millennium Films studio is a 53,000-square-foot facility in the city's Ledbetter Heights neighborhood. Diego Martinez, head of Millennium's Shreveport operations, tells the Shreveport Times the soundstages and office space should be ready by late January and a grand opening is scheduled for February. Construction on the $10 million project started in December 2009. Shreveport lured Nu Image/Millennium with more than $2 million in value for land acquisition, site preparation, drainage work and improved sewer lines

Moonbot parade on tap for today for the Oscar-winning, Shreveport-based animation studio...

http://www.shrevepor...bot-Bots-Monday

In their first year of existence, they created a story line, then built an animated world, won multiple smaller awards, and then landed the big one: the Oscar. Bill Joyce and his crew really deserved to win this Oscar. I've thought highly of Joyce ever since he created the Roly Poly Olie character and it became such a big household name for children.

Here is what the Big Screen Animation website has to say about this (http://www.bigscreenanimation.com/2012/02/eyes-on-moonbot-studios-after-morris.html):

After the success of Lessmore, larger studios are said to be reaching out to director William Joyce and the 35 artists at the company; the paper calls it "a step toward Moonbot's ultimate goal of making a feature-length film."

Moonbot Studios is something to be very proud of, and I'm thankful that Joyce has decided to keep it based in Shreveport rather than move it to California or somewhere else. I once heard a whisper, back in the beginning of Moonbot when Joyce was hiring his talented crew, of Moonbot possibly someday rivaling Pixar. Perhaps not being as big as Pixar, but being enough competition to keep them on their toes. Who knows what the future may hold, but I can say to Bill Joyce that he's doing a good thing for his community.
