Transit center now due in '09

Completion of the City of Detroit's Rosa Parks Transit Center has been pushed back another year.

The center, at the corner of Cass and Michigan, eventually will serve as the city's downtown busing hub.

When city officials announced they were naming the center after Rosa Parks in November 2005, they said it would open in 2006, but contract extensions expected to come up for votes before the City Council today would put off completion until as late as March 21, 2009.

Maybe the RPTC would be done faster if there were more than 5 people working part time on the project. I have been by there several times in the last couple weeks and seen real actual work going on just a couple of times, whereas other projects around town have dozens of workers on site from sun up to sun down.

  • 2 weeks later...

It has taken a while, but they ran into some problems when they realized that half of the infrastructure coming out of the SBC building went right through the project site. SBC was asked if they had any utilities running through, but apparently they didn't seem to know or care if they did. These had to be relocated before work could progress. It makes building a simple project all the more complicated. After all, you can never have a project completed on time or on budget, especially in Detroit!
