Chain Thread: Add One Element To Create A Perfect City

Recommended Posts

The city needs to have history, and it has never allowed it's historic beautiful buildings to be destroyed. It has rolling hills outside of the central core. The city has something unique about it, and it has a major corperation located there. Oh, and let's see and  there's no war there, no discrimination, gangs, drugs, child abuse or sadness.

The city will have passed ordanances and worked with county, other cities, and state governments to insure that urban sprawl is curtailed by protected greenbelts, investment in an effective fixed guidway based Mass transit system such as LRT, subway, streetcar, etc., and a sound urban master plan that is pedestrian friendly and minimizes the need for owning an automobile.

Paradopolis should incorporate a Museum of Local Architecture to document, categorize, and report back to the community on these historical markers. A local group of architects, designers, private citizens, etc. form a cooperative to study the historical built environment in Downtown. They call the not for profit: Center of Paradopolis Architecture.

Designate a few blocks for an arena/entertainment district on the edge of the CBD adjacent to the Convention Center. This could include: Near the arena(or baseball stadium) could be a mix of hotels, restaurants, retail, interactive water fountains, cinema-bowling mega-plex, farris wheel, mini-car racing; mini golf. A pavilllion/amphitheatre for music venues. Add a few mid-rise condos to the mix too.

The city or perhaps just the core (depending on how large the place is geographically) should have large parking decks adjacent to its peripheral highway(s) in which residents park any cars they may own. An extensive grid of streetcars (LRT) or elevated transit and demand-responsive buses or vans will carry residents anywhere they need to go within the city and to the train station(s). Therefore streets within the city are to be shared among transit, peds, and bicycles--no autos (except deliveries & emergency vehs)

The city should have an overall popn density of at least 20,000/sq mi.

It shall build the World's Tallest tower, Paradopolis Tower, with rotating restaurant, 360deg viewing level at the top, showing the world the plush river valley, the nice mix of office towers, historic residential, and arenas....

needs to be in a two-season climate of stifling summer humidity, daily tornadoes and triple-digit august temperatures; combined with an immediate turnaround into a deep-freeze winter where daytime temps are colder than the morgue and there are just enough breaks between snows for everything to turn into slush before it freezes up again.

or, a semi-arid mediterranean climate with pleasant distinct seasonal variations, adequate precipitation and no natural weather hazards...

It shall have a network of monorails, self guiding people movers and moving sidewalks. This would eliminate the need for cars for getting to work, shopping, school etc. The city would still have roads for those who choose to drive, but the traffic issues would be minimized. Wide pedestrian/bike corridors would parallel streets.

A self guided people mover is individual, constantly moving cars which seat 4 (or six if you're friendly). You enter an area with a moving sidewalk. At that point, the cars are moving the same speed as the sidewalk and are easy to enter. Once the car leave the station, it picks up speed to 20 mph. There is a navigation lever which lets you choose your path at "Y" intersections and exit points. Or you can input your destination and the car will automatically take the correct path. Monorails would be used for longer trips to the outskirts.

I did a quick composite of how our perfect city might look, using several photos.

Does this city have a name yet?

The city should have at least 200 "time consuming" cultural attractions (museums, theaters, concert halls, night clubs, annual festivals, etc.) and at least 100 "quick" cultural attractions (monuments, landmarks, and other things that can be appreciated quickly) in addition to the aforementioned architectural beauty.

A cultural scene that includes the following: one major film festival, some smaller/local festivals, at least one revival house showing US and international classics, at least two fluorishing art-house cinemas running current indie and international films, at least two well-powered college radio stations, a fluorishing music scene including venues, bands, indie and/or local labels and a creative mix of styles from indie rock to hip hop to electronic to folk to international, and an active literary community with active writers, successful independent bookstores, readings.

And a civic atmosphere that doesn't utterly ignore or undercut the success/efforts of the above.
