I'll be visitin your beatiful city around the 22nd of May. Are there any festivals or events to attend? I want to get a good feel for the city in general so what spots should I check out? I'd like to know what restaurants I could eat at that have some local flavor-- southern cooking, bbq and such. Also, my cousin lives in the St. Andrews area/Irmo area so what is there to do in that area? Are there any parts of town to avoid; I do expect to go clubbing as well and I dont want to go to a hole in a wall in a rough part of town. I'll probably be in town for a week or two so any info will be appreciated!!! Thanks in advance!!

I see that May 22 falls on a Monday. The weekend before, Black Expo will be in Columbia, an event that I will be attending. Actor and humanitarian Danny Glover will be the featured speaker. For other events, I'd encourage you to check out the Columbia Convention and Visitors Bureau website. You'll definitely want to check out the Vista, downtown's historic district which contains several attractions, including Finlay Park, the State Museum, and EdVenture children's museum. And although streetscaping construction is going on, a visit to the Five Points district is always worthwhile. You might also want to check out Riverbanks Zoo and Garden and the Columbia Museum of Art. As for restaurants, you should be able to find some suggestions in this thread.

And, of course, don't leave town without walking around the State House grounds and the USC Horseshoe a couple of blocks away.

Thanks so much to all of you!! I've heard that Columbia was kind of dull!! I can see that isnt true!! All of your suggestions sound great! I will have to definitely extend my vist!

As with just about any city except the absolute largest ones, you have to do your homework in order to get the most out of a city. Unfortunately people who fail to do this end up dismissing a city and badmouthing it. We're glad you came to a credible source first. ;)
