Choctaws to Build Casino in Jackson County?

A short article in the Sun Herald indicates that the Choctaw Band of Mississippi may wish to build a casion in Jackson County. So far, Jackson County has no casinos, though there have been whispers about the possibility of casino development post-Katrina. The article suggests that this would have to go through a referendum before anything could be built. I'd say that this looks like a strong possibility, but the opposition to casinos in Jackson County has been vociferous in the past.

I think a casino in Jackson County could prove extremely profitable.

The Mobile area spends tons of money in Biloxi-area casinos, and most

would enjoy having an even closer option.

I'm sure the existing casinos in Biloxi are not relishing the idea of competition so close on their heels. Expect to see a tooth and nail fight on this one.

I suspect that Indian casinos may have some tax advantages over private casinos as well.

Putting my lawyer hat on, I'm not sure what rights Mississippi has to tax what is considered a sovereign nation such as the Choctaws. I do know that in certain areas, Indian affairs aren't subject to state jurisdiction.

Anyway, if non-taxed, that would be a huge advantage in terms of the payout percentages the Indian casinos could offer on slots for example.
