The Summit Phase 1 construction has begun. There is no creek running under the building. Wood pilings are a foundation system commonly used to support large loads on softer soils. A four story structure would constitute a large load. Thanks.

Sounds like things are buzzing at the Gateway. News of proposed student apartments in the area as well plus potential further retail and office expansion.

thanks for posting! i missed that part of the article. Center Stage is the only decent off campus housing in the vicinity for students at WSSU, NCSA and Salem so yes this is badly needed.

A CLT company specializing in urban housing will build 91 town homes and 59 single-family houses in the area adjacent to the Gateway, Salem College, & NC School of the Arts (formerly known at Happy Hill). Prices range from 160k to 260k. Construstion to begin this month, presales start March 3rd.

This looks like a great addition to the Gateway area! It looks like the housing will have detached garages behind the main house, and all the streets interconnect, no cul-de-sacs! This is a great example of desirable in-fill development!

The YWCA at the Gateway is scheduled to open on June 16th. The basketball arena is to be named after former female Journal Sports journalist Mary Garber.

rezoning for the student housing complex goes before the planning board on thursday. im pretty sure that some pretty strict site guidelines will be set in place to preserve the historic nature the Washington Park neighborhood.

Reading that article about the proposed student housing project, I'm not quite sure that's the right type of development for this area. The schools don't seem to think it's needed, and I'm not sure if the layout would appeal to the "non-student" market. I think this needs to be declined.

WSSU needs to speak up. every fall theres always an article on lack of student housing. true theyve built 2 new dorms in the last 2 years, but that only fixes today's problem. a large number of their students live out by the mall and even as far as kernersville because there arent any decent apartments in east winston. trust me this is needed. im not too sure if its in the right location, but something like this needs to be built.

WSSU doesn't seem very supportive of the project, according to linked article. My main concern is the design, if it's not successful as student housing the floorplan doesn't seem to lend itself to traditional apartment living.
