I have to be a homer and say New Orleans. Downtown is always very busy, packed with workers and tourists, and the atmosphere is great. It's just alot of fun being downtown during the day and night. And then you have the Mississippi River running right along side you, the French Quarter is only a few blocks away, and the beautiful Garden District only a streetcar ride away. New Orleans' transit system downtown is very well put together, and streetcar and bus lines are very easy to use and get around on. The Superdome and the New Orleans Arena are located downtown, and one of the world's premier aquariums, the Aquarium of the Americas, is located at the foot of Canal Street along the river. Harrah's New Orleans, one of the largest casino's in the world, is also located on the foot of Canal. Downtown New Orleans offers anything for anyone.

Other than NOLA, I would have to say Miami and Atlanta are some of my favorite major downtown's in the South. I'm not as sure about some of the more mid-sized cities.

OK guys, there is an "other" option. :whistling:

Exactly. Don't get bent out of shape over the list, just vote for either an existing city or choose the 'Other' option and describe the city you wish to describe. No harm, no foul.

Anyway, my pick is New Orleans. Within walking distance of downtown you have the beautiful riverfront area, the French Quarter, Garden District, Warehouse District, etc. Not to mention along the riverfront you have numerous facilities catering to tourists and locals alike (museums, aquarium, riverfront mall, convention center, casino, etc.)
