An article in today’s Arkansas Democrat-Gazette links to a video provided by the Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department that displays a computer animation of the interchange design and traffic flow from practically all directions. The three dimensional effect of the simulation gives a good idea of what the completed project will look like from the air. It’s worth a look. Find it at

Wow...I was aware of the "flyover" ramps to avoid the cloverleaf 630-430 interchanges in all directions, but I had NO idea how unbelievably complex, and frankly involved this is...not just in construction, but in actual use. I consider myself very savvy with orientation/directions, and looking at the animation, it's downright confusing. Pretty crazy! :shok:

The video does give a great idea of how the interchange is going to look at the end of contruction. I can see why now it's going to cost so much. I'm with you Architect, I didn't realize how complicated this is going to be with all of the extra lanes and fly over ramps. I guess I won't complain that much about the construction. Not until they start doing the work on 630 and the Shackleford intersection :)

Local news reports today it will be two more years before Phase 3 is complete as of April 2011.

http://www.arkansaso...ic-ye-20110406/

"The work on the latest phase began in January, but heavier than expected snowfall hampered work initially. For all the work that is going on now, only about 2.5 per-cent of the project has actually been completed, which means motorists who use the interchange should anticipate marked changes over the next few months."

Here is a PDF I found showing the aesthetic designs that are going to be incorporated into the earth walls and flyovers: http://arkansascarry...laesthetics.pdf

I saw that a couple days ago and forgot to say anything about it- thanks for sharing. Thanks for the PDF too, I hadn't seen that but it's nice to see what they have planned for the aesthetics of the new interchange. I'm a big fan- it's not that hard (or expensive) to do these little decorative touches to make the interchanges seem less harsh and ugly, and I remembered thinking when I was in Dallas a lot last year how much nicer a lot of their interchanges looked than ours due to the little touches like that. Maybe someday we'll see improvements to the 630/30 interchange and the downtown interchanges done in the style and line of thinking as the 430/630 project. But that will probably even be more difficult and expensive to do due to space constraints, so I'll probably never see that happen.

Overall I think the designs are rather interesting. Although I do admit I'm not so sure about the colors. That one design looks a lot like a design of E Fay Jones. The overhead vaulting of the Mildred Cooper Chapel in Bella Vista in fact. I wish Arkansas had been doing this a while back ago when a lot of other states had started it. I would have loved to have some sort of aesthetic aspect to section of I-540 in NWA. But with the way the AHTD focuses so much into building roads in rural Arkansas I guess I'm lucky we have what we have.

Change order sought by AHTD on current phase of interchange work....

I'm all for this- if they can go ahead and get everything knocked out all at once instead of having to rebid and have a partially completed interchange that sits a bit before being completed and messes up traffic all over again- go for it!
