Census: 4 percent of Kansas Citians use public transit

About 4 percent of Kansas City workers used public transportation to get to work in 2002, a new survey from the U.S. Census Bureau shows.

Of the 212,900 workers older than 16 who live in Kansas City, 91 percent commute by car, truck or van; 82 percent drive alone; 10 percent carpool; and 4 percent take public transportation, the study showed.

Kansas City tied with Sacramento; San Diego; San Jose, Calif.; Aurora, Colo.; Waukegan, Ill.; Austin and San Antonio, Texas; Yakima, Wash.; Sunrise, Fla.; and Phoenix, all of which had 4 percent of workers using public transportation.

Nationally, about one-third of the nation's 6.4 million people who travel to work on public transportation live in New York City, where 55 percent of workers use public transportation.

Washington, Boston and San Francisco each had more than 30 percent of workers using public transportation. In Los Angeles, the second-largest U.S. city, 12 percent of workers use public transportation, whereas in Houston, the fourth-largest city, 6 percent of workers used it.

Overall, about 5 percent of the nation's 128.6 million workers used public transportation to get to work in 2002. Bus transportation constituted 55 percent of public transportation use nationally, and subway or elevated-rail use constituted 29 percent.
