COMET executive director John Andoh told Columbia City Council on Dec. 18 that the bus system will begin the first phase of "revamping" the Soda Cap on Jan. 28, including changes to the program's routes.

According to Andoh, the updated Soda Cap routes will be:

- A route that goes from the Main Street District to the Vista, then over to West Columbia and Cayce.

- A route will go from the Main Street District to Five Points, then over to neighborhoods in the area of Harden and Taylor streets.

- A route that runs during Columbia Fireflies home games, picking up in the Main Street district and running to Spirit Communications Park in the BullStreet development.

The two current regular Soda Cap routes pick up in the area of the State Museum, run up through the Vista, meander through the Main Street district, then head east on Gervais Street. One route splits south on Harden Street toward Five Points, the other splits north toward Benedict College.

Another key change will be in the hours the Soda Cap runs, with an expansion into late night on weekends. The new hours will be Sunday through Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Thursday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to midnight.

The Soda Cap will still be free to ride when the changes come in January.
