Volvo increasing plant size, employment at Berkley County plant

Volvo Cars — which in 2015 announced a $500 million manufacturing campus that will employ 2,000 people just up the road from Jearlina's — said this week it will hire another 1,900 workers for an expansion of the plant that's scheduled to start production next summer.

They are basically doubling the number of jobs and amount of investment. Wow.

Hi. Is it worth it to make a Myrtle Beach sticky thread at the base of the SC section?  There's probably more buildings over 10 stories in Myrtle Beach than any city in SC. And in NC for that matter.  I wonder what the exact count is for 10+ buildings in Myrtle Beach.

Sorry for the delay in my reply. We can certainly pin any thread for any city, but pinning threads is based on discussion activity - not number of skyscrapers. I would love for there to be enough discussion about Myrtle Beach to warrant pinning a thread!

South State merging with FL lender, HQ relocating from Cola SC to Winter Haven FL

The largest bank headquartered in South Carolina is combining with a Florida lender in a stock swap valued at $6 billion.

Columbia-based South State Corp., and CenterState Bank Corp. announced the tie-up Monday. The deal is expected to be finalized by Sept. 30. Shareholders of both companies must approve the transaction.

Whlie South State is technically the buyer, CenterState will own about 53 percent of the merged company, which will be headquartered in Winter Haven, Fla., and be led by CenterState CEO John C. Corbett.

South State was created when SCBT bought First Federal of Charleston in 2013, but its roots go back to the Great Depression. The bank expects to maintain a large presence in its existing markets in the Carolinas, Georgia and Virginia, including the Charleston region, where about 25 percent of its employees work.
