I worry that the state's coffers are going to be hurting even worse because of announcements such as the attached.

They are workers, but at least they are not a part of the 4,500 core workforce. These employees, as explained in the article, 'respond to the ups and downs in the market.'

The only good thing about the BMW layoffs is that the major expansion underway at the plant, mentioned in the article, will open the door for many (if not most) of them to return for employment on the additional assembly line. I am hoping the economy will improve or at least find stability soon enough to retain the skilled workers before they locate permanent employment elsewhere.

One of the problems with a post like the one quoted below is that it provides no information about the content of the article. As you may have noticed, eventually these news links are broken and therefore the post is useless without details regarding the content of the article. Additionally, some people prefer not to click every news link someone posts. That is just my POV.

Yep. Links are encouraged, but Skyliner summed it up quite well. UrbanPlanet asks that you provide some context about the link's subject and what you think is important about it. Urban Planet isn't a news site, its a discussion board. We want to encourage discussion, and opinions drive discussion as much as facts.

Monsoon, do you mean no link posts at all? Or do you mean no posts with one liners and then a link? Can we not do a paragraph and a link?
Gosh, this is written in English. What is it that you don't understand? Everyone here agreed to read and abide by these rules when they joined the site. These rules have been here in this form for years. I spend too much time on this subject.

:yahoo: Excellent news! Nice to hear about the higher paying executive positions. Another great corporate name to add to the area's list.

An advanced materials company is expected to announce in the first quarter a $160 million investment in the Upstate that will bring more than 100 jobs according to Upstate Alliance. Also, according to the S.C. Chamber of Commerce, total investments across the state last year reached $4.1 billion. That is a slight increase over 2007. Half of that figure stemmed from the Upstate. I read an article a couple of weeks ago that said companies that are too small to make headlines are laying off employees like crazy all across S.C. The job announcements we've read about recently haven't come to fruition, but even if they had they would not be enough to offset the job losses coming from the really small employers. Attached is the latest county-by-county and MSA unemployment figures just released by the S.C. Employment Security Commission. Things aren't looking very good right now, guys.
