The one in Five Points just looks shabby right now. I can understand why it is going away, but its still kinda sad to lose a neighborhood hardware store.

I hope that redoing Five Points will resuly in the area between Harden and Millwood being renovated. There are some really nice homes back there, but some truly horid ones as well.

First Friday in Five Points (not sure that's the official name) debuted last night. Retail stores stayed open till 9 p.m. It's a new thing they're doing the first Friday evening of every month.

I think that's a great idea. I can't ever get over to Five Points to shop during the week and I always sleep late on Saturdays/have stuff to do. Now they can capture some business from people eating out on Friday nights. They really need to publicize this and expand it to every Friday night.

Here's an article in this week's edition of the Free Times about a new fountain and farmer's market which will complement the streetscaping project in Five Points. It's good that the streetscaping is finishing up just in time for the St. Pat's Day festival. Also, the seasonal 5 After 5 concert series in the village is set to begin April 5.

I am dissapointed that the new fountain will be smaller than the current one. I liked the current one just fine, so I think that an upgrade would be more desirable than a downgrade.

"As for the new fountain, planned for a median at Saluda and Blossom Street, the association will foot the $250,000 bill for it, Brewer says.

I'm very excited about St. Patrick's Day in 5-points, especially with the revitalization being complete (or almost). Here is a link of the event.

ST. PATRICK'S DAY IN 5 POINTS

Whoever is incharge of this St Pat's in Five Points event did a good marketing job. I just passed a billboard on Laurens Rd here in Greenville for this (assuming it was up before the event  ), and there was in ad in The Tiger, Clemson University's student newspaper, before Spring Break. From the looks of the advertising and how widespread it was, I'd say Columbia could be the new Savannah on St Patrick's day...??? :dontknow::good:

And next year all the construction will be out of the mind's of even the naysayers, so look out!

I think Five Points is already seeing the fruits of the revitalization. Five Points has never hurt for business, but I ate lunch there yesterday and the area was absolutely PACKED. There were literally thousands of people down there and it was just a typical day, there was nothing special going on. I know it isn't scientific, but Columbia just seems alot more crowded in recent years - especially the Vista and Five Points. Has anyone else noticed this?

Definitely. Last night I ate with a friend in the Vista, and on the way back to my truck the vibe was very energetic with more people walking up and down Gervais and along the side streets than I've ever seen, other than for Artista Vista or Vista Lights. Then we rode down to Five Points and every bar had a line 20 deep out their door, with groups of people walking up and down the sidewalk and crossing at every intersection. And people were sitting and standing as thick as they could stick at the fountain. As I said in another forum yesterday, I think it is a noticeable result of more people having heard about Columbia, whereas there used to be no marketing efforts at all.

I went to 5-points last night and it was very crowded. I have been noticing more and more traffic and people downtown as well, especially when the weather is this nice. Anyway, here is a couple of pics from yesterday afternoon, I can't wait for all the new trees to grow leaves.

I think the 5 points revitalization looks great and will look even better when all the shrubs and landscaping is complete, but why wasn't the area revitalized to its fullest. There are still powerlines and ugly powerpoles along Greene St. running right through the heart of the village. And there are powerlines along Blossom St. running right past the Wachovia and in front of the new proposed fountain on Saluda St. I don't understand. :dontknow:

I sure have. All over Columbia I ride around and say to myself "Where do all of these people come from?".
