ric75, this news story will interest you. Work on repaving Cary Street between Thompson Street and The Boulevard should be completed by this Wednesday. I like the idea of marking the pavement so thru drivers and potential parkers can line up their vehicles more accurately. Readers of Southern Living praise Carytown as one of the 10 best shopping neighborhoods.

Carytown Merchants protest plans for the vacant Verizon building on Nansemond Street.

They met with developers and expressed their concerns.

Apparently, the developers displayed a rendering of their renovation intentions. One local merchant is quoted as saying: "What they've shown is beautiful." [but] "I don't want Carytown to be a mini Short Pump."

Thanks, JSI, for the USA Today report on 10 existing movie palaces across America.

Actually, The Byrd was built in 1928, not 1922. Also, if (and when) the theatre is re-seated, capacity will drop a bit from 1,300.

Here's its website with lots of information about the building and upcoming events.

Every March, The Byrd Theatre, in collaboration with VCU and the University of Richmond, hosts the largest French Film Festival in America.
