According to the Press, Triangle Construction has stepped in as an investor on this project. And financing is being shared by Fifth Third, Macatawa Bank and Shore Bank of Chicago.

It looks like the top portion of the building is eating the bottom portion of the building. Seriously though, I think this would be a nice addition.

It reminds me of tetris.

I think it's great, and I think it'll do wonders for that corner indeed that whole strip on Division which is already coming along.

At this point, I will just be happy to see something built there. I dare say that Sam has gone through more than any other developer downtown to get a project built.

I'm no big fan of modern architecture, but I sorta like it. I'm a bit disappointed by the lack of balconies though. Oh, and is that a pill box/gun turret window I see in the dark grey area in the center? I don't get why they design those windows like that.

I think it's because those floors are the theater floors of UICA, so they probably want minimal windows.

Not a fan at all of it from an architectural standpoint.

I totally beg to differ. It's about freakin time that GR is finally getting some modern architecture into the scene. As nice as all the buildings are - about what 90 percent of them are brick?

We need more funky architecture like this into future projects. Now if that mystery building renderings that were found for market/fulton would come to life...

I didn't mind the architecture for those mystery buildings. I think what bugs me the most about this is it looks like made it out of legos and had a bunch of lego pieces that were too big, but used them anyways. There's no cohesion between the tower and the bottom at all, it looks dropped onto the top as an afterthought by another architect who had not seen the plans for the rest of the building.

GRAM = Good modernism.

Gallery = What are they thinking?

But, I still want to see it built. It does have what matters most: the street-level transparency, and what it will provide to the area and community.

Looks like they used a microfiche reader for inspiration...

:P

As much as I love the design - my response to that was LMAO - really I did laugh my asphalt out.

I love it. Build it! Let's get away from the Vandenberg Center little square boxes of the '60s. Thank heaven for the JW, HDV Children's Hospital, the VAI, and now this. Grand Rapids is opening up.

Don't quite know what to think of this, other than :yahoo:

Construction fence, some kind of excavation going on (they're not just stockpiling dirt, they're digging down)

Maybe someone (eridony?) can get some better shots tomorrow. I was on my way somewhere else and had to stop.

Maybe they are looking for Jimmy Hoffa. :shades:

Oh, it must be that new parking lot the city has been asking for. :silly:

Oh, none of the above. Nice to see this project appear to be starting construction. Has there been an official ground breaking yet? You know guys in suits with shovels.

When the building is finished, will you be able to see those old painted adverts on the side of that building? Or will they disappear into the history books yet again?

I'll try to get some shots after work if no one has beat me to it by then.

This is a surprise, I didn't expect to see any work for months still.

I'm pretty sure i read that there would be a 2 foot space between the gallery and 'the wall' and it would not be very visable. i hope they tie the 2 together somehow. i think that old wall is artful.

Well not much to see on the site. Judging by GRDad's picture it looks like nothing happened today.

small hole:

big hole:

entire site (notice the construction fence doesn't cover the whole site):

I wonder what they are doing, it doesn't look like the actual start of construction. Besides, I don't think they've even had their groundbreaking yet and you know how much developers like those PR events.

It looks like they are digging in the area of what will be the city-owned parking ramp portion. Maybe the city is prepping for work, since they've now closed on the deal.
