Talk about a bombshell!

But seeing how the UICA bet big and lost on their new digs, this is likely the best thing that could have happened to them, and honestly is pretty exciting for everyone involved.

It is a good thing. The panel that spoke said that closing this fall was a very real probability, without some kind of major partnership.

I believe it was dripping all over the sidewalk and onto passers below who complained, and then they shut it off. And it all died.

When I worked downtown, it would often drip on me on my way to work. I wasn't one who complained, but I'm not sad to see it gone.

Talk about a blast from the past resurrecting this old thread!

I have mixed feelings about this news. Frankly, this has seemed like a very long time coming/inevitable for anyone who was connected with "insiders" at UICA, and in another dimension there is likely a much better user for that space...and with that said...I'm not sure how feasible filling that giant space with all of its idiosyncratic variables will be.

Their 4th move in almost 20 years.  Sadly I see the UICA becoming little more than a department at Kendall with a web page and a letterhead. You just cant go from this building custom made for your organization to some cubicles inside of Kendall.

What will become of the current space? That is going to be a real difficult question to answer. It at least has on-site parking, so it will make it far eaiser to move.

It was a bad idea from the start. They never fully utilized the building so I can see why they need to move. I could see the westside of Fulton being an attractive spot if they added an entrance and a mezzanine (cool bar/restaurant space?). With current conditions, I think it’ll stay empty for a long while. Harsh new realities.

Someone suggested to me it'd make a great space for a science center. It would be cool, especially with the high ceilings in the black box theater and that one gallery toward the back upstairs. The movie theater auditorium would be great for films and lectures.

I think it would feel more "active" with this kind of use too. Every time I walk by UICA it feels like everyone went to lunch and just left the lights on.  #crickets
