EAST HARTFORD -- Bringing new life to Main Street Redevelopment Area II, St. Francis Hospital and Medical Center has begun work on a three-story office building.

Hospital officials will hold a formal groundbreaking today on the 29,699-square-foot medical office building, but work on the site has already started.

Rolf Knoll, senior vice president and chief medical officer for St. Francis Hospital and Medical Center, said East Hartford was chosen for the new facility because many of the town's residents have been patients at St. Francis in Hartford for years.

"East Hartford has been a key patient [area] for St. Francis for 20 years," Knoll said.

The new building will benefit both St. Francis and East Hartford, he added.

"It should be a catalyst for growth for downtown East Hartford," Knoll said.
