^^Interesting on Louisville I thought they already completed the merger, guess those things take some time.

What I like to look at being from a metro with it's host city only 55 sq. miles (even smaller then teeny tiny DC's city limits) is pop. density and % of the host cities population in the metro stats. Something like Phoenix has 82% of its population counted in the "metro Phoenix" definition whereas Pittsburgh has 23% of its population counted in "metro Pittsburgh". Just throwing #s out there but the prob I have always had with city rankings is that it is not apples to apples because cities like Jacksonville, Phoenix and Houston have almost all of their metro population counted inside the city limits, whereas DC and Pittsburgh have numbers that bely the size of their metros, DC especially. Just my two cents.

Yea, right now only some of the city is completley merged..The nesus bureau couldn't count the whole county into Louisville's population because some of the nearby towns still had their own government. After 2006 when they are completley merged those towns will count as Louisville and up the population to about 700,000 making it larger than Austin, then it will become the 16th largest in the country. I know..its very confusing.

I'm surprised New York City lost over 20,000 people. I guess the real estate prices are driving some out. I really doubt if it's the crime.

Unless of course the census bureau is wrong. Anyone remember when the 2000 census results came out? They had their population clocked pegged at about 276,000,000 and I really thought the highest it would get to would be about 279,000,000 and that's sheer maximum. I was pretty shocked to get on the internet and to see 281,421,906.

Also they had NYC at about 7,480,000, when it was actually 8,008,278.

I would take these with a BIG grain of salt.
Here's an example why.

Grand Rapids:

April 1, 1990 Census: 189,673

July 1, 1990 Estimate: 190,418 (+745, +0.4%)

July 1, 1991 Estimate: 189,681 (-737, -0.4%)

July 1, 1992 Estimate: 189,619 (-62, -0.0%)

July 1, 1993 Estimate: 189,226 (-393, -0.2%)

July 1, 1994 Estimate: 189,052 (-174, -0.1%)

July 1, 1995 Estimate: 188,937 (-115, -0.1%)

July 1, 1996 Estimate: 188,579 (-358, -0.2%)

July 1, 1997 Estimate: 187,656 (-923, -0.5%)

July 1, 1998 Estimate: 186,219 (-1,437, -0.8%)

July 1, 1999 Estimate: 185,009 (-1,210, -0.6%)

April 1, 2000 Census: 197,800 (+12,791, +6.9%) :shok:

July 1, 2000 Estimate: 197,862 (+62, +0.0%)

July 1, 2001 Estimate: 197,394 (-468, -0.2%)

July 1, 2002 Estimate: 196,543 (-851, -0.4%)

July 1, 2003 Estimate: 196,139 (-404, -0.2%)

July 1, 2004 Estimate: 194,689 (-1,450, -0.7%)

July 1, 2005 Estimate: 193,780 (-909, -0.5%)

The 1990's estimates indicated nine consective years of losses. The increase from April 1, 1990 (census) thru July 1, 1999 (estimate) was -4,664 (-2.5%). The increase from April 1, 1990 (census) thru April 1, 2000 (census) was +8,127 (+4.3%). Unless Grand Rapids miraculously gained 12,791 between July 1, 1999 and April 1, 2000, the estimates were way off.

Well, not really.

The estimates for the decade are based on the previous census, +/- whatever criteria they use to calculate the intracensus estimates. So, 1999's estimate is based on the 1990 census. At 2000, the census "resets" the estimate scale, and it is recalibrated, as the 2001-2009 estimates will be based on the 20o0 census.

They aren't saying that all that popluation gain happened between 1 July 1999 and 1 April 2000

17 Memphis city Tennessee 672,277

28 Nashville-Davidson (balance) Tennessee 549,110

119 Knoxville city Tennessee 180,130

143 Chattanooga city Tennessee 154,762

211 Clarksville city Tennessee 112,878

:D

Although I do believe that the Nashville census estimates for this decade are rather low (local estimates would put it near 570,000). :P
