I've been using it for a few years, now...

Thanks!

BarGal, the Chin Tiki will be open for the last time during the Motor City Tiki event during the weekend of July 22nd. Mark your calendar!

Allan, did they have anything this past weekend at the Chin Tiki? I didn't think about it until Monday morning...

I went by there Sunday afternoon. The doors were closed and locked. In years past, the place was open both Saturday and Sunday. Maybe it was only open on Saturday? Or not at all?

With anything our great city does, it takes alot of time to find out precise values and information. We had it linked on our blogs(sometimes it was even a dead link) Best to keep checking the link posted above or call and be persistent on what you want to know as a prospective business owner or resident. They'll eventually tell you if you ask and ask often(over a day or three.) The site will give you some idea of how the property has appreciated over the years however because generally they will list date of purchase and date of sale along with tax evaluation and ownership stakes. When we buy the Gold Dollar we'll know more :)

Peace to you and Peace to Detroit

I think Illitch is trying to get the best deal possible from the city, that's why he is mentioning the suburbs. He would be stupid to move the stadium from downtown and all his other investments. If he keeps the facility downtown or near downtown than all his other interests, fox theater, hockeytown, copa, and motorcity casino recieve spinoff business on game nights. It just doesnt seem like a smart business decision to move the team after hes invested so much in downtown already. Im only speaking about a new facility because I think renovating to Joe would be a huge mistake and Mike knows it. Joe Louis is quite possibly the ugliest arena in the United States, has no quality luxury boxes, and Illitch is aware of this. He will build a place worthy of America's greatest hockey franchise. I see the new arena staying downtown or near downtown in one of three locations. Either behind the Fox, the Motown Building site on Woodward, or possibly next to MotorCity casino if he can get the land.

A little off of the topic at hand, but I thought I would brag a little here seeing as how it kind of relates to the Red Wings.

I got to see Vladimir Konstantinov this morning. He is staying at my fiances hotel (I won't say whice one) here in Traverse City for the weekend and he was there standing with his wife in the lobby this morning. I say "standing" loosely, he uses a walker, but seems to get around just fine. I don't think he speaks English anymore though. When talking to people he has to get translations from his wife. Other wise things look alright for one of the best defenseman hockey ever saw.

Anyway, back to your ramblings. :D

This whole thing has problems written all over it. I would not mind seeing it get moved up behind the fox theater, and have it be an Arena District, however they need a much better name, and no Illich Land is not it.

If Illich moves the Wings to the burbs, I think that fans will turn on the him like a rabid dog, and he would not be able to show if face in Detroit ever again.

Regardless of where he moves the stadium, I am worried that it will be designed like some disoriented and possibly inebriated geometric shape. It would be much better if it was constructed to look like a larger version of old sports stadiums with bricks or stones, arches, and massive gates. Additionally, parking will be a concern. Underground parking lots and mixed use parking structures on adjacent lots, (Outside wall is residential, office, or commercial and core of building is a parking structure) would help to enhance this district, provide parking, and allow for a win win deal... even for the evil team owner.

Comerica for all realistic purposes is a not a bad looking baseball stadium. The Joe is ugly as sin, however it has history.

I doubt the design will be crappy for a new arena. Illitch was pretty much dead on with the trends when Comerica was built and it has the modern amentities and the design that most people like these days. The new arena where ever it goes will most likely be one of the nicest places in the country with everything a people expect from modern arenas. I wouldnt expect a Joe Louis clone or something as short-sighted and lousy as that design.

I was about to say that nearly anything would be better than the exterior design of the Joe, easily one of the ugliest/awkward stadiums in all of professional sports. And, he's definitely not moving out of the city, and even downtown, that much I feel certain of. In fact, it's almost a given that this arena will have to be somewhere in the northwest quadrant of downtown.

Ilitch: Our town is on the rise

First up: a decision, in the next 30 days or so, on whether to renovate the Joe Louis Arena or build a new arena for the Detroit Red Wings hockey team, which Ilitch also owns. A renovated Joe could include a wall of glass windows overlooking the Detroit River

A renovated Joe Louis Arena would pretty much rule out an expansion of Cobo Center. I think this talk of renovating the Joe is a smokescreen to keep the price of Foxtown property from skyrocketing.

Thank you for the above.

Knowing that then, it appears that building a new arena makes more sense for the city as a whole. Plus, I don't think many owners choose to renovate over build new. I guess the one recent exception would be the Bears with Soldier Field.

Which has a lot more "new" than "old".;)

So much new in fact, that I believe they stripped the title of a Historical Stadium or Landmark from it.

I agree that it needs to be an entirely new stadium. They need that space in Cobo badly. Weren't they also talking about taking down Cobo Arena as well and making that into actual convention center floor space?

They've been talking about expanding it for many years, now. But, barring some newfound regional cooperation, there is no way to expand it. Detroit can't expand it on its own. There was talk at one time of getting one of the casinos to expand the center, but that obviously never came through. The NAIAS is becoming VERY cramped, and something needs to be done, but since the suburbs aren't going to help pay for it, there is no way Detroit city with an increasingly tight budget every year, can afford to go in alone on a Cobo expansion unless they do it on the very cheap, which really wouldn't be worth it.
