Two years after his first attempt failed, U.S. real-estate mogul Donald Trump is planning to build a 68-storey luxury hotel and condo tower in downtown Toronto.

At 308 metres, it will be the tallest building in the country, surpassing the 298-metre-tall First Canadian Place in downtown Toronto, Trump said today in a release.

Trump, the New York city developer who is riding a wave of publicity as the result of starring in the popular reality television program The Apprentice, said the tower will be rich in luxurious features, offering health club and spa, restaurants with martini and sushi bars and even butler service for an exclusive number of hotel-suite owners.

The most expensive suite will top out at $18 million. A one-bedroom unit will start at $2.5 million.

Construction is expected to start next year and the building will be completed in 2008.

The $500-million Trump International Hotel & Tower will be built at the corner of Bay and Adelaide Sts. and will be the tallest, mixed-use residential and hotel building in Canada, Trump says.

In 2001, the Trump Organization announced it would develop the Toronto Trump tower in conjunction with the Ritz Carlton hotel group. The deal fell apart the following year after the luxury hotel chain pulled out.

Trump will operate and manage the condominium residences and hotel. The building was designed by Eberhard Zeidler, Senior Partner for Toronto-based firm of Zeidler Partnership Architects.

"This development will set new standards in luxurious living and hospitality in one of the world's most vibrant and welcoming cities," Trump said in a release. "It is a magnificent tower in a city that is great to live in and visit. I am very proud and excited to have the Trump name as part of Toronto's beautiful skyline."

A five-star hotel will comprise the lower portion of the building to the 34th floor. The condominium residences will overlook the city from floors 36 to 68 and offer one-bedroom units to three-bedroom penthouses.

All residents will have access to the amenities of the five-star hotel.

Individuals or corporations can buy the hotel suites. The hotel will offer 229 hotel guestrooms and suites, of which 34 suites will be part of the Trump Club that will feature butler service and a private lounge.

The condominium residences will feature formal dining and living areas, "exquisite" hardwoods and granites, top-of-the-line appliances in designer kitchens, and "the finest features and finishes available," Trump says in the release.

The Trump International Hotel & Tower will also feature an 18,000-square-foot health club and spa with views of Lake Ontario and the CN Tower.

The facility will also contain two restaurants and a sushi and martini bar. One of the restaurants will be an exclusive, formal, fine dining establishment seating only 80 patrons and led by an international, award-winning chef.

"Nothing like this has ever been built in Toronto," said Trump. "Toronto real estate is undervalued when it is compared to other leading cities in the world."

The Trump International Hotel & Tower, Toronto is a joint venture between Trump and Talon International Development Inc., a Canadian-based investment company.

I agree. The building will be awesome once it's completed.

Trump needs to build something similar in LA now. LA hasn't had a new large skyscraper in a long time. Or he could build something tall in San Diego & get the height limit raised. If anyone can get the FAA to lift the 500 foot height limit there lifted it would be him.
