Best food in the South?

6 posts in this topic

What city in the South do you think has the best food, overall?

We'll exclude N.O. because it's so obviously in the vanguard of world cuisine:)

Charleston.

From the NY Times travel section on Charleston:

For almost two centuries Charleston thrived as a central port in the slave trade. Still, with walker-friendly dimensions, dozens of bed-and-breakfasts, upscale shopping and maybe the South's best restaurants outside New Orleans, it reveals itself as more than a pretty place.
Praise from the St. Petersburg Times:

[Robert] Carter is among Charleston's chefs making the familiar better with playful Southern twists and local produce. These perfectly executed classic dishes combined with the chefs' special touches are helping make Charleston a destination for food-lovers, even without the odd pairings and verbal bling becoming standard in much larger cities.

Obviously there are places that have earned their ranking among the best in the nation - New Orleans, Charleston - but I will take my home city of Greenville anyday of the year. We are well-known by many as having top-notch food, and with well over 80 (eighty) restaurants in downtown alone, you've got anything your heart desires within walking distance of several great city highlights. Add the awesome hospitality that people expect to find here, and it never ceases to satisfy our visitors.

Please! no more which city is best topics!

A better approach would have been, please describe good unique food experiences that you have had in the south.
