Man dies in fall from Detroit casino parking structure

Saturday, March 6, 2004

ASSOCIATED PRESS

A 42-year-old man died Saturday night after either falling or jumping from a parking structure at the MotorCity Casino, police said.

The man, whose name was withheld pending notification of relatives, was pronounced dead at 10:26 p.m., said an officer with the Detroit Police Department's gaming division who would not give her name.

The man jumped or fell from the fourth floor of the structure, the officer said.

Police at the scene told Detroit's WDIV-TV that foul play was not suspected. The man was described as a regular patron at the casino, one of three in Detroit.

A MotorCity spokeswoman declined to comment.

Solomon Bell, an off-duty police sergeant from Oak Park, fatally shot himself inside the MotorCity Casino on Jan. 26, 2000 -- a month after it opened -- after losing thousands of dollars gambling. His was believed to be the first suicide inside a gambling hall.
