Fairy Doors in Ann Arbor

I ran across this site that documents little small doors found on some buildings in Ann Arbor. Some call them fairy doors. Does anyone know what is the purpose of these doors and the history?

I've heard about these doors, but thought it was just a rumor or legennd. But wow! There they are. That's really crazy. I'll have to run an electronic search on them at my university library.

My girlfriend and I printed out the map to the doors, we are going there sometime. Imagine walking by a building and seeing one of the fairy doors, I'd be like what the...
