Iditarod Dog Sled Ceremonial Start - Anchorage

Here it is.. the Last Great Race known for 32 years as the Iditarod. From Anchorage to Nome, the Iditarod race has teams of dogsledders mushing from Anchorage to Nome making the equivilent of traveling from the south right corner of Missouri, USA to the center of South Dakota, USA.

Well now there are only a few mushers left.. people are begenning to leave and well.. i'll do that to.

YUP! those are my pics! I just had to surprise you by finishing up on my camera on the eve of the Iditarod :D

and yes, I was born and raised in Anchorage all my life. My dad first came up in 1952 i believe along with his sister who opened the first mexican restaurant in Anchorage which is the La Cabana ;)

How long is the Iditarod race - and do they dogs get a break at nights, etc. to rest? I imagine that if it takes place on a highway it's going to cause serious transportation problems due to the lack of roads in Alaska - but I guess nto, because there's no road connection to Nome.
