Marquette, MI

After attending school in Marquette for the past 3 years, I thought it was share a little of what I have come to love. Some of these shots are rather large, too bad UP doesnt allow thumbnails.

Heres a little blurb about the city.

Marquette is the largest city in the UP, with a population around 20,000. Marquette is a major port for iron ore (and nothing else), and is the home of Northern Michigan University.

The old ore dock. The train track/bridge that used to span over downtown to connect the dock has been removed. At one point there were plans to turn the dock into condos and stores somehow. The shack looking building has some of the best fresh fish I've ever had, straight from the cold Superior waters.

Here are some new condos being built on Lower Harbor.

Heres a path down Lower Harbor. Marquette has a TON of paved trails throughout the area, as well as an extensive network of hiking trails.

Peter White Public Library. This is a real cool library, with large fireplaces to read by and large arm chairs.

Cool alley shot. There are a couple resteraunts that you can only get to from this alley. More of an urban feel that I like.

My girlfriends favorite yarn store. There are a lot of yarn stores in Marquette. Knitting is trendy now.

Wow! Those are some of the best photos of Marquette that I have ever seen. Photos of this city are so hard to come by on the internet, so I thank you for providing. I love, love, love Marquette and have some very fond memories of it, especially the railroad viaduct and pier. What an amazing structure that use to be!

I haven't been in Marquette in such a long time, I think it's about time I repay it a visit and try my luck with my camera.

Thanks again! :)

Thanks Michi, I'm going to take some more this week of some of the unique neighborhoods, the working ore dock, and The Village.

And here are two churches I forgot.

Theres almost always a wedding taking place here. It's downtown and has a nice view of the lake from the back.

What? No photo of Border Grill, Marquette Mountain, or Up Front and Company?

I too am a NMU alumni (2002) from the planning program up there and former ASNMU Rep. My parents live in Escanaba and I still have friends up there so I make it up from time to time.

Marquette has undergone a lot of changes in the past 10 years. When I move up in 1997, the city still had the South Rail Road Yard, the Ore Dock in downtown had the timber up to the buildings, and the lake shore was not cleaned up and still had vacant buildings.

You can sort of see the Boarder Grill (Express one, on Washington). I know, I missed Up Front and I realized that today. I'll get the mountain next time I'm out there with my camera... hopefulyl before winter :P

I still want to take some pictures of the old houses above the harbor and a couple shots up and down 3rd/4th street.

I plan on going out to Whitmoores Landing this week, which is right next to Sugarloaf Mountain. Great scenery, I'll bring my camera.

Great Pictures. A little history of your Court House might be worthwhile at this time. Anatomy of a Murder a true story was filmed around Marquette and the court house and town are featured in the 1959 movie with Jimmy Stewart. Its a classic.

Marquette is my favorite city in the UP and where I hope to spend many of my summers after retirement. I haven't been there in 2 years, I guess I need to make a trip again this summer.

I agree, great photos!

These make me very excited as my family and I get ready to head up this Friday, for our regularly two-week stint at our camp off of 550 on Superior.

And, you managed to include both, the church I was married at (Presby) and where we stayed for the first night of our honeymoon (Landmark) before heading down to Charlevoix for the rest of it.

It's good to see UP in the U.P., eh?

urban guy
