I don't see the Branson analogy working well with a St. Regis resort. I hope the Branson elements are kept to a minimum.

When we're talking resort, are we talking like a spa and golf course akin to what they have down in Phoenix and Tucson with their Marriott, Westin, and Hyatt resorts? Cuz I think that would add another dimension to our buffet of enticements for tourism if we had four or five of those around the metro.

Yes. The same company developed the St. Regis at Monarch Beach in California. This should be a significant project. There were also references to a "convention hotel" as well as a "boutique hotel" in the project. From everything I have seen and heard, this group knows what they are doing.

Another movie studio wants to move into the Memphis metro. MGM is planning to put in a studio in Riverbend.

Was the MGM studio a legit working studio, or more of a touristy thing? I got the sense it was more touristy than anything else.

I hope I'm wrong, though, and that MGM actually diverts shoots to Memphis with the intent to film here, and actually do entertainment-related business here. I wonder what kind of film incentives there are in Mississippi, especially given the exorbitant incentives Louisiana provides.

The Myriad has hired an engineering firm. Anybody know if its possible for them to get a plan in place by mid-September? (when they said they would breakground).

And a couple of new 3-D rendering of the siteplan

And the flat Siteplan:

Thats what I inferred as well but the news report says a movie studio. Maybe they meant the film academy? Its possible the school could double as a legit film studio for low budget films.

I wonder if this will be a "studio" like the one they have behind the MGM Grand in Las Vegas...it's pretty basic and filmed the show "Ask Rita" when I was there (Rita Rudner).

Possible Renovation/Expansion at the Goldstrike

MGM/Mirage is dropping hints about the possible renovation/expansion of the Goldstrike casino in Tunica. I expect they might attempt a serious upgrade and repositioning. One never knows.

I wonder if this would involve bringing the Gold Strike up to a Beau Rivage level of luxury or if it would be something as simple as room ammenity upgrades...While I doubt the Memphis/Tunica market could handle Riverbend Crossing developments, the Myriad, AND a mega development that would replace the Gold Strike, I'd love to see it converted in style to that of the Borgata in Atlantic City...moderately-sized and still an extremely luxurious hotel/casino. I'd also like a name change while they're at it!

A name change would certainly help them reposition the property. As you say, I am not sure how many additional rooms they would need to add to the hotel, considering the thousands planned for the market. That said, I could easily see them adding anything up to another 1000 rooms, though it would more likely be a smaller tower of perhaps 400-500 suites. From what I have heard, I think a repositioning is very likely.

I think the Myriad is going to be built somewhere along Mhoon Landing Parkway which is about 30 miles from the state line.

I just wanted to correct this post I made earlier. The Myriad will infact be much further north than this. It'll only be about 3 miles south of the Hollywood Casino on Perry Road just west of the Indian Mound Road intersection. I think the Myriad and Riverbend will bring in more tourists, not strech an already thin market.

On George Lapides show this morning George had his weekly Mississippi Tourism Update with who ever is head in the state. He said Riverbend groundbreaking will begin October 1st and will take 5 years. I do remember them saying before it will be in phases. He said the MGM studios will rival what is in Orlando with rides, studios, shows etc. It will be a real amusement park, which we do not have. I think the MGM part will be opened in 2 years. Expect us to get all the mid america tourism croud from New Orleans/Chicago/Texas/Colorado/Ohio that usually would make that trek to Orlando. This area with its location and casinos may rival Orlando because adults can have real fun in this area. Just my thought!

What are they doing about hotels?

It will come with a hotel. But the whole Riverbend project will have plenty of hotels. The one mentioned initially is a St. Regis.

Riverbend will have a 600 foot tall Ferris wheel called "Voyager Wheel" (largest structure in Mississippi) and 1,300 acres including an entertainment center complete with thrill rides, a water park, three hotels, retail outlets, a golf course and almost 1,200 home sites in phase one of this project.

Hopefully that's true. Memphis would really start rounding out its offerings if that were to happen. It would fuel the need for a combined rapid transit system as well as maybe a riverboat ferry from downtown Memphis to Riverbend and Tunica.

If Riverbend and Myriad max out, and SFX builds its own amusement park and maybe a casino here after a Vegas one, man, think of the possibilities of combining that with what we already have downtown. Just need to find a way to market it all in an identifiable package.

I think the rapid transit system and riverboat ferry rides has potential to grow and be successful. The riverboat ride along the Mississippi River to Tunica, a night of fun, would do well. It would surely beat the boring drive from Memphis to Tunica. The drive is too unpleasant for the transit and riverboats not to do well.

Picture this: You just got talked into going to Tunica with your friends. You already don't really want to go but get a burst of "What the hell" and looking to have fun. I am not sure how long the drive is but it is most definitely a mood-killer.

The rapid transit should be themed after entertainment. Both the rapid transit system and riverboat ferries should be vivrant and entertaining. I wouldn't want the rides to Tunica to be too enteraining that it would have the customers all partied out before they even hit Tunica. I think both Tunica and Memphis should really work together in this because the potential of this project has a lot of upside. Maybe some kind of package with transportation, food, DRINKS, etc paid for on the trip to Tunica would be a nice market?. Shoot, the trip could be called "From Memphis to Tunica" and make the trip a trip to remember..Now thats the trip up; I don't know what the trip back would be like,Lol...Just a vision.

Just a point to thik about. The ferry rides from Baltimore to Annapolis take all day. any ferry from Memphis to Tunica would take about as long. It could work as a day long excursion going either way, but unless it was something like a hydrofoil an evening trip down really wouldn't work.

I think we need to distinguish leisure trips and commutes. I think there may be a market for both slow rides as well as speedy ones (for workers or visitors not interested in a leisurely ride).

Thats what I was thinking. Man, I bet funding for such a project would be massive. I do like the hydrofoil idea but it wouldn't beat the idea of a nice riverboat ride. Its so southern and fits in with the image of Memphis.

W/ regard to the riverboat aspect, couldn't the Memphis Queen line fill that? I think the rapid river transport would be expensive but beneficial.

Article in today's Business Journal on the 721-acre Tunica development with 900 homes. Sale prices will start at 140k.

The article claims there are 15,000 jobs in Tunica. I know that's entirely due to the casinos, but that's quite substantial for a county with 10,000 residents! I wonder if there's a similar county elsewhere in the U.S.

Yall might know this by now but I emailed John Mayo and asked him about the MGM Theme Park being built at the Riverbend crossing. I asked him if the park will have Thrill Rides and when he was going to update his site with pictures. To my suprise he answered my email right away stating this.

First, Won't be having updated photos until dirt starts moving in 4-6

weeks.

It won't have thrill rides like Six Flags Atlanta. It will have rides.

The idea is that a family will go in different sections and experiece

"the movies". For example on "Cut Throat Island" there will be pirate

ships that kids can shoot the cannons, pilot the ship, stuff like that.

In "Big Country" they'll be a ride where you strap into a hand glider

and "fly" over the Delta. The Beach Blanket Bingo area will have a

beach for swimming, boardwalk, and a carnival like area with rides.

After I got this response to me it looks like no rollercoasters

I guess we'll have to keep looking then for a theme park. I kind of figured that the atmosphere of the development was "low-adrenaline," w/ its emphasis on the retiring demographic. Maybe SFX will bring some of that here. I just don't know whether Riverbend will be an attraction or not, and if it doesn't work then MGM will use the lack of traffic as an excuse to pull out as opposed to acknowledging that their strategy was uninspired. But I'm being premature. I'll wait and see. And hope that it turns out better than I am expecting.
