Nashville International Airport Development thread

The attached article outlined how Southwest Airlines is reconfiguring it’s network during the pandemic. It appears that Nashville BNA will remain one of the carrier’s top cities, even with a reduced flight schedule. Southwest does not operate “hubs”, however it will certainly be using BNA as a major connecting point to maintain flights throughout its network.

If I read that graph correctly, Nashville is going from being Southwest's 9th largest market to 6th.

BNA VISION MILESTONE: Several airline ticket counters are moving into the new North Terminal Wing Expansion on the Departures level.
-United will be operational in the new space tomorrow morning. 
-Frontier, Spirit and JetBlue will be moving there soon. 

Where to find the new space: Just past the existing United, Spirit, JetBlue, Alaska, Frontier and Allegiant ticket counters on the North side of the Ticketing Lobby. #BNAVision

Looks like terrazzo to me.

Whatever it is, it's going to make the terminal a lot noisier.  And a lot more generic.

Yeah, sorry I wasn't sure what to call it.    "Tile" didn't seem right.    Anyway, just wondering if that will be used throughout the concourses as well as the ticket counter and baggage areas.

I like terrazzo in airports, but some noise mitigation will likely be required to make up for the loss of sound absorption of any carpet removal in the renovation.

BNA VISION MILESTONE: The first passengers to utilize BNA’s new North Terminal Wing checked in yesterday for a United flight. If you’re flying with United, you’ll need to go to the airline’s new ticket counter space in the North Wing. Additional airlines will relocate there soon. Stay tuned.

The Nashville International Airport reports seeing a 95% drop in passengers due to the coronavirus epidemic, joining the chorus of industries that are being ravaged by the potentially deadly virus. 

Compared to last April, and coming at the heels of the airport's busiest February ever, this April has seen only a trickling of passengers — only 5% in fact. 

"This is the deepest drop we've ever seen," Nashville International Airport CEO Doug Kreulen said by phone. “This takes us from 2020 back to 1960." 

The Nashville airport typically sees 50,000 travelers a day, and that number has plummeted to only 1,000 or 2,000 daily visitors.

Didn't realize that the terminal wing expansion areas had security zones part of them.  Makes since due to the main lobby construction starting soon.  I assume the south terminal wing expansion will include one as well.  I think I remember reading that the B and A terminals will be cut off airside from C and D during the main lobby renovation, correct?

Yes, North (A/B) and South (C/D) will be separate after the South Terminal Wing is complete in September. After that, the main terminal lobby will close for 2 years. The new North Security checkpoint was set to open by May 1, but currently, all security is routed through the existing South checkpoint, based on existing demand

That was just the first phase. Later, probably when the international facility is done, it will be completed and used for easier maneuvering and I think some aircraft parking spots.

The existing main terminal and lobby will close late this year for construction of the new Grand Lobby and International Arrivals Facility 

Notice the tunnel construction in progress that will serve international arrivals, in the future. Also, Garage C (opening in June) and the Administration Building loom predominantly over the existing facilities

- last year BNA was number 5 for growth in USA, behind only Atlanta, Dallas, Charlotte, and Orlando - all large hubs

North Terminal Wing
- open

North Checkpoint:
- scheduled to open Apr (waiting on TSA certification)

Website redesign:
- new site is now live
- built 'mobile first'

Runway 2L/20R extension to 12,000 ft:
- Environmental Assesment for Professional Services Contract awarded to AECOM Technical Services
  - the scope of the EA includes two tasks:
    1) Early Project Planning
    2) Impact Analysis and Preparation of EA document
  - $3.3 million
- Design Contract awarded to Garver LLC
  - $2 million

Runway 2R/20L (reconstruction):
- contract awarded to Hi-Way Paving
- originally built 1989
- FAA has written up BNA for the past 2 years
- $51 million

garage C (under construction):
- orginally scheduled to open floors 1-4 in Feb
- will now open in June to allow extra work for valet and customer reception area

Concourse D (under construction):
- scheduled to open July 5th
- net 2 gates to 45 (add 6, but lose 2 on B and 2 on C for IAF construction)
- no party/reception is planned, at this time, as a precaution for safety and budget

South Checkpoint (under construction):
- scheduled to open Sept
- once this opens, the main terminal can be closed

Administration building (under construction):
- scheduled to open Dec

Grand Lobby:
- tunnel excavation underway (will be used for arriving IAF passengers)
- existing main terminal expected to close by Dec

hotel and parking garage B:
- RFP issued in march and closed may 1 and will be awarded in Sept
- hotel scheduled to open Sept - Dec 2023 along with the Grand Hall opening

Donnelson Pike:
- TDOT scheduled completion is Dec 2023
- Terminal Access Roadway project has moved up scheduled completion to Dec 2024

BNA Vision 2.0
- Conceptual Plan for the Environmental Assesment approved
- South Apron Expansion begins Jan 2021, completed Jul 2022
- Satellite Concourse - 8 gates (2 years)
- North Apron Expansion begins Jan 2021, completed Nov 2023
- Concourse A expansion (4.5 years)
- 65 gates when completed

pandemic:
- Passenger traffic down 85%
- 61k pax per day, now 2,000 per day
- load factors 10%
- was 550 flights per day, now 266 (but many of those get cancelled)
- gloabal traffic down 65%
- BNA is prepared to manage the last 4 months, because FY20 was 13% above budget
- Cargo Apron Reconstruction Phase 5, cancelled until further notice

John C. Tune airport - tornado damage:
- 17 hangers destroyed

Final words:

1) BNA is still moving forward with the 2L/20R expansion - that is huge. The funds came from bonds (that can not be used be used for operating expenses, budget, etc). Also, the first step to rebuild Concourse A, is to fill the giant hole to extend the apron/taxiways - and this project is a go for January, which is great news

2) Monday and Tuesday flights this week had many flights with 100+ passengers, so hopefully things may be on the way back to normal
