Yeah...I don't understand spending $100 Million and leaving something to look unfinished or halfway done.

I agree. I know it's always a money issue but good lord you would think a glass wall to match the windows to at least cover up all the A/C units sitting at the edge of the building. I think it ruins the look of the building.......and then there is the Westin. I am still holding out hope for it.

I guess that's the price we pay for having this many towers rising. At least a few are going to be flawed/ugly/etc.

TBT: "Vendome Theatre on Church Street was built in 1886-87 as an opera house with two balconies and sixteen boxes. The main curtain featured scenes from the Paris Place Vendome. The first performance was October 3, 1887 featuring Emma Abbott in “Il Trovatore”. It was rebuilt in 1901 to the plans of architect Frank Cox.

"Loew’s took the hall in the mid-1920’s providing vaudeville and movies. The last movie was “The Dirty Dozen” seen on the evening of August 8, 1967. Patrons that night reported smelling burning rubber. After the last show a thorough search of the theatre found nothing. Later the janitors discovered the upper balcony ablaze. The ceiling and roof then caught fire and collapsed into the auditorium bringing both balconies to the floor. The Vendome Theatre’s lobby survived as retail space until 1986." (info from Cinematreasures.org).

In '86 the entire block was torn down for the Church Street Mall Shopping Center, which in turn, was torn down just 13 years later to make way for the new Downtown Library, which opened in 2001.

I'm a big fan of old theaters.  This one was definitely a classic---would've been great to figure out how to save it---but it appears that there was a lot of structural decay that led to its demise before anyone in the city had the foresight or finances to do anything about it.

Besides the Vendome, look at all that was lost on that one block alone!    What is the magnificent Romanesque building with clocktower just to the east of the theater?    Pretty sure it predates my arrival in Nashville in the early '80s. 

Then there is the Sudekum building and Tennessee Theater visible in the next block.   Another shameful loss.

That magnificent towered building was the old Watkins Building. It was demolished and replaced with the non-descript (ugly) "new" Watkins Building around the '50s or early '60s. That was later demolished for the present library.

Yea Nashville's a real pretty city. Reminds me of Cincinnati and Austin. Not trying to derail this thread but when I went hiking I just had realization of how nice the city is. First pic was taken in Franklin and second at Luke lea heights.

I could be wrong, but to me that looks like Fall Creek Falls, which is about 45 minutes east of McMinnville.

You know, I'm not generally one to advocate tree removal, but I think we could turn Ft. Negley into a much more interesting attraction with a few "strategic" clearings, so visitors could get a clear view of what you could actually see from the fort during the war. Perhaps a short (I'm talking 20-30 ft) observation deck built in the middle of it all.

If done right, I think that could become one of the visitor "hot spots" for photographing the skyline. We don't have too many as it is.
