TBT: Looking towards the SE across downtown around 1958.  Some items of interest:

1) You can still see remnants of Hell's Half Acre slum in the lower right portion of the shot.

2) The new Main Street Bridge is under construction over the Cumberland.

3) There's a small rail yard to the SE (right) of the Shelby Street Bridge where Riverfront Park/Ascend Amphitheater are now.

4) Flood plain in area where PSC Metals is now (upper right center).

5) The utter blight that was the East Bank with the barge company and other industrial sites.

6) The manufacturing buildings that dominated the area of where Municipal Auditorium is now eastward to the river.

7) The primary core of downtown at that time ran on an axis Capital Blvd. from the Capitol Building down to Church Street, and from east to west alongChurch, Union , and Charlotte.  Broadway was not nearly the epicenter it is now.

8) And even though we've lost some old beauties like Sam Davis Hotel, Maxwell House, and Sudekem Building, there are still at least 20 prominent structures from that time still with us, along with the bulk of the historic districts along 2nd Ave., Broadway, sections of 3rd, 4th, and 5th Avenues, etc.

This would be somewhere around 1953-55, just as they were clearing out the area to start construction on the James Robertson Parkway. Note, too, the L&C has not been constructed yet, and it was completed in 1957 (and proudly held the distinction of being the tallest skyscraper in the entire Southeastern U.S.).

Also, Hell's Half Acre technically referred to the area on the base of the north side of Capitol Hill.

^^Couple of questions:

On Whiskey River...are they just doing a total "tear down and redo" on the inside and leaving the walls?  I would hate for anymore of that structure to be damaged.  What a beautiful building.

On James Robertson...what's going on on the backside of the building?  Is some of that new construction?

Not a total tear down, just a gut and addition. The same goes for the JR. They are adding what seems to be a floor on top of the building, and we will have to wait and see how that looks.

There is also work being done in the Opry Originals building where Red whatever is going. Also one of the buildings in that area will be having a rooftop addition for a Mellow Mushroom. Too much going on now for me to remember and I have a pretty good memory.

On related note as to what all is happening down town is the following;

One of the upcoming NBJ panels, which is more than I would spend is got a power house of people and Basically says we are just coming of age. Here is the link.

This photo from the Tennessean, from August 2016, shows what it will look like.
