It was designed to showcase its "suspended" design, constructed above the theaters by hanging from the core. Not only was it an engineering feat, it avoided the need for support posts in the theaters. The exposed beams could have been enclosed, but the design was cutting-edge at the time. The exposed beams were a forerunner to the BofA building in Atlanta.

Never knew that- very fascinating, thanks!

Tennessee Tower (nee National Life) was just started at the far left in photo. Also, excavation had been done for the Andrew Jackson state office building midway between the Capitol and Municipal Auditorium.  The upper portion of Parkway Towers also appears to be under construction.

Still missing part of its sign, the new Sheraton Motor Inn at 10th and Broadway is now serving guests Dec. 11, 1968. Sheraton Nashville, with its 300 guest rooms, is the newest lure for travelers and convention-goers.

Dont forget it was a Ramada in between all that.
