NES and the cable companies will gladly bury those lines if your projects pay for them to do so, and if it is feasible to do so.   Most developers don't want to fork out that extra cash, and most publicly funded road projects don't have the cash.  Per the photo above, some of that power grid around Division St. project had already been relocated from the Convention Center project a few years earlier, only to be relocated again.     Those are pretty healthy power lines.........i cant imagine burying them being an easy task.

You are right as to these particular lines. I assume the city's strategy is to wait for that area to be more developed before forking over the money to bury them and/or waiting for a developer to bury them. Otherwise, they risk having to dig them up to be moved again. Also, these being on new metal poles look much better than most of the above ground lines around the city.

Makes me sweat zooming in and seeing that guy sitting on top of that newly-installed crossbeam.  I can just imagine that whole thing toppling over.  Those men / women have some guts.

As long as you're not home in the afternoons to bear the West-facing heat, you would have some amazing sunsets, and lots of cranes, on the West side.

It's more than just aesthetics, though. I know it's expensive, but for safety and reliability reasons, burying the utilities in the denser urban areas should be something that gets chipped away at, bit by bit. I'm tired of having to dodge telephone poles in the middle of sidewalks, tilted at 30 degree angles with the fix being a second adjacent telephone pole tethered to it. And I have lost electricity to my house about a half dozen times in the last year, usually due to thunderstorms, most recently when a telephone pole in my alley got struck by lightning. No power for 12 hours, and the surge fried the garage door and sprinkler system (which I've now outfitted with surge protectors after repairs). The costs of emergency repairs must add up over time, too.

Key point... 'gets chipped away at, bit by bit."  Nashville officials are woefully lax in addressing this. I realize NES has a LOT of clout, but there does not seem to be any cooperation between them and the city. City leaders don't even seem to think it's  a problem (or a need). By comparison, Chattanooga has done a great job over the past 20 years at burying utilities as each section of town gets more built up. The city, county and EPB work very well together. There's a fairly big effort right now in Collegedale (eastern part of the county) to put utilities underground. After a destructive tornado back in spring 2011, all parties realized that u/g utilities have a huge benefit that can't just be put in dollars. 

I was recently driving Church Street in Nashville and just couldn't believe how shabby it looked, and how dangerous it truly is with utility poles every 50 feet or so, and then realized how close it all is to NES.

Installation of the precast facade has begun on the Fred D. Thompson Federal Courthouse.  The other photo is hanging in Judge Trauger's chambers and presumably represents the latest version of this impressive building.
