Walking back to the car last night from the Titans game across the Woodland Street bridge. I've been walking this same route more times than I can remember after Titans games for the last 20 years, but haven't been able to the last three years because of deployments and other obligations keeping me away on game days. It is astonishing just how much it has changed, not just over the last 20 years, but the last 5, especially how much the skyline is filled in and stretches to the south. I remember when they built the Pinnacle building, and how I thought the design was cool but how I really didn't like the placement. It stood out on its own too much, and I thought it should have been built over one of the many surface lots north of Broadway. There was no way it would ever fit in, and would always just be this weird outlier outside the skyline!

Several photos from my walk to and from the titans win last night. 
 

nissan stadium is the best location in the country, in my opinion, and the area has the potential to be even greater. I’d really like to see NashvilleSC and the Titans to partner and activate the East bank with an entertainment district and full renovation to nissan stadium to be the home of NashvilleSC, the Titans, Super Bowls, college football playoffs, final four, CMA fest, etc. 

The clear (ie plastic) roof covering implemented on SoFi stadium can be done to Nissan, and more suites / stadium enhancements can be done as well. Praying for it!

The Silliman Evans bridge across the Cumberland River was  built for I-65 and the inner loop.  For years the Nashville Banner called it the Wharf Avenue Bridge because they did not want to acknowledge that it had been named for the publisher of the rival Tennessean.

 

 

Believe it or not, this fellow finished medical school and practiced medicine for 40 years.

My late uncle who attended Vandy during the early 1960s used to talk about a problem with the Silliman Evans bridge with angle of its ramp. Instead of being slanted inward on the curve it was too flat. And that caused several cars to go over the side. I always thought he was just smoking something, but seeing those photos reminded me of that. Also, do you know the guy hanging from the bridge personally or was he well-known in town? But the bigger question, why? Or is that an optical illusion (like jumping up from a spot much closer than the bridge in the background)? Looks real... his forearms appear to cast a shadow on the concrete edge.

There was a spectacular accident on the Silliman Evans bridge in the early 70's. A car packed with about eight people in it hit the curb in a median causing the car to vault over the railing a fall 90 ft. or so to the ground below killing all the passengers. Not long afterwards the bridge was almost completely demolished and rebuilt to be much more safe.

Note: As the bridge was being rebuilt and I-24/65 was closed, famed movie director Robert Altman, who was making the movie 'Nashville' used the closed section to film a spectacular multi-car crash at the beginning of the movie. The scene is here 22 seconds in to 45 seconds. There are other scenes from the movie in the rest of the video. I don't know if it has objectional content, so watch beyond the crash scene at your own discretion.

The athletic fellow was my classmate at Hillsboro.  It is a bit of an optical illusion because the abutment sloped away from the camera to the ground below so he was only a few feet above the sloping concrete surface.  As to "why" I was 18 at the time so we never got around to answering why we did stuff.

I should add that if your uncle went to Vandy in the early 60's he was a classmate of my daredevil friend.  Also, I admire the attention to detail that prompted your question.

One more oldie.  In 1962 they were building the I-40/I-24 corridor entering downtown from the east.  This view, with workers and bulldozer present, was from the Fesslers Lane interchange.  Should have made it twice as wide.
