The Union Station is such a gorgeous old landmark, I just really wish they would replace Flat Mercury with a three dimensional representation of the Roman god. (Photo from Pintrest-Mercury laying down on the job after storm damage, approximately 25 years ago.)

Agreed - so much. Hard to believe it is a "flat" Mercury. I definitely wish it was 3D. But it is unknown to most people here

Replace the current statue with a replica of the original 3D statue but this time mount it on a movable pivot which would allow it to sway a little bit in high winds instead of just being blown over.

You have no idea how long it took me to figure out the building in the middle is the Grand Hyatt!  From this angle and with the snowy weather, it looked like two buildings…and I was thinking, “When did we build two cool buildings with sloped roofs?”

I remember when Union Station HAD a full 3D statue of Mercury.  The original 1900  bronze statue fell onto the Broadway viaduct right whre it joins with the actual surface pavement.   This was in 1952.  The one here is the first flat copy they installed which bent over back in 1998.   A photo does nothing  to give scale to it though.  Here is a photo of the battered original Mercury down in the yard after workmen cleared it from the street.  As you can see the thing is huge.  Maybe 25 feet tall or so?  I wonder if any piece of it survived to the present.   The flat one is a piddly-squat replacement, 10 feet tall or so.  I never liked it at all compared to the glorious original one.   Nothing compared to the historic one that fell.   Sure wish Amazon was aware of this  piece of Nashville history and could donate the funds for a replica to be installed.  After all, they have a good view of it from the upper floors of the Grand Hyatt.  If not, then why can't someone start a funding site...it would not be the first time Nashville has donated to erecting  a god(dess) after all.  Probably it won't happen after all the clamor from the religious right getting Athena back into her temple.  Back when the Titans first came, I proposed a promo for the sale of skyboxes. Athena  leaves the Parthenon, ducking through the big doors, grows to real godsize  and walks down West End like Liberty in Ghostbusters2.  Passing Union Station, Mercury jumps down, grows and proceeds with Athena toward the river   Cut to all the gods watching a game from clouds above the stadium.  Announcer... ' Some skyboxes still available.  The Olympian deluxe boxes are sold out.

From some reason that reminds me of this Preds game intro they used to do.  However, I thought the saber-tooth tiger jumped on the Batman building at one point.

I am working on another map. This one will take a while, but I am looking at all of the vacant lots, their ownership, etc.

 Now the other aspect of this is I am doing a lot of research into midtown and finding that there are just a few major property owners that control huge parcels of land, that if sold will eventually transform the landscape and skyline of Nashville.  Unfortunately a lot of the older buildings in midtown are part of these huge parcels, including many on Church, Hayes, and West End. 

It comes down to 4 maybe 5 big land holders that go under the radar, some you know and some you don't. 

The SoBro area has been hot so a lot of those parcels have already changed hands once or twice or have yet to go up for sale. When you look at the current development map there are a number of parcels that are in a new color that stands out a bit better that will be developed at some point. 

There are a couple of ways the CBD will have more development and that is if the few surface lots get built on, or buildings start coming down. Not very many parcels to that on other than what we already know about. There are some structures that can come down including some older parking structures.

Two lots that are prime candidates to be built on with surface lots are the lots at 7th & Commerce and the large lot on Church in front of the old Library. Both are owned by the Carell Family.

Another two lots on the NW & NE ne corners of Commerce & 5th are owned by the Central Church of Christ. With the Church Property on the NW & if the L & C Parking garage properties on the NE side were taken down, these two sites are valuable beyond belief. 

With all of that being said, what you will see on the map once finished is there are other locations in the CBD that can be built upon if the price is right with unlimited height. This would require some buildings coming down, but newer buildings are not as much of a le
