This is a photo from the digital archives of the 1985 yearbook from Tennessee State University.  I'm sure the photo was to capture the main campus of TSU and to show the downtown campus as seen in the inset.  This is one of few photos I've seen of the TSU campus that still has John Merritt Blvd. continuing through the campus.   But, look at downtown and especially SoBro.   This photo may have been taken prior to 1985.  It was also in TSU's 1983 yearbook.

That pond in the shots of the East Bank is probably a natural feature. It appears on maps dating back to the 1850s, and was know for years as Shelby's Pond, then Hardison's Lake. People paid to fish in it, right up to the time the Silliman Evans Bridge was built. It seems to have been filled in when Steiner-Liff bought the property in the early 60s. I remember when Fountain Square opened.  It was with such fanfare.  It died almost as quickly as the fireworks bursting in air.  If you worked in Metro Center and lived in Bordeaux as I did, it was a great addition for the workforce and residents nearby.  There wasn't much in terms of food options in Metro Center until Fountain Square.  And, the shops and movies theater were a much needed bonus.  Oh how I enjoyed Fat Tuesday's...  

So, they no longer have the floating fountain?

I stumbled out of Fat Tuesdays over to AMC Fountain Square on several occasions. It was great while it lasted.

I agree. Yet in my mind I'm still 'placing' all those buildings on the drawing boards at their future locations.  Instant gratification...  I guess I'm just greedy.

I am doing a new map of sorts and this one will be geared toward where the development trends may be going. In the screen shot below you will note areas in blue and red. The blue are buildings that could easily come down with no significant architectural loss and the red are vacant lots, 

The key when looking as this grouping of buildings and lots are the fact that this is unlimited height. If we get monster office towers, I predict this is where they will go as Commerce street is primarily a business street already.

The 'Bandshell-ish' where the Nashville Shakespeare Festival is now doing their summer shows. I will be involved in the set design, a little bit, for this summer's show (if they have one).

What you call a pointless front lawn, I call that a privately funded park. Different perspectives. Many people enjoy that green space, daily

Lol easy tiger, I was merely making an observation about it's size.  I realize it is privately funded and I have no doubt that some people probably enjoy their sack lunch there on occasion, so calling it "pointless" was inaccurate hyperbole on my part.  In any case, if it is going to stay, which I'm sure will be, it'd be nice if they invested in it a bit more and made it more functional and interesting.  I remember reading that there were plans to renovate some things on that property.  Perhaps that is part of the plan?

Take it easy tiger, they have been upgrading the landscaping and the grounds recently.  I saw it the last time I walked by.
