Correct. The building is all concrete, not terrazzo. I'm not a fan of the color or even choice to paint the building (cannot ever get back to the original now), but some folks like it. To each their own.

I guess you could categorize this building as a Brutalist Architecture style. Probably the most polarizing style of architecture one could argue due to the extreme reactions that it could garner. Painting over the concrete is kind of a slap in the face of the style itself I would say.

There clearly are elements of brutalism with the building's exterior design/materials. But not to the level of the Avon Williams Campus Building from which TSU operates downtown. That building is so ugly it's beautiful (and I'm half serious).

My theory is that the gray(s) tend to make the casual observer think it's steel and metal panels, so more modern. Also the gray will likely age better than lighter colors.

Correct on the lighter color theme. Darker (whether on clothing, cars, buildings, furniture, etc.) almost always works better over time than lighter. Similarly, the "cool colors" (blue, black, green, gray, etc.) are typically more elegant and effective than the "warm colors" (orange, red, yellow and pink) for a large building's exterior materials, signage and paint. Obviously, small homes (the Painted Ladies in San Francisco, for example) and night lighting for high-rises can be effective with the use of the "warm colors."

Walking on the beach today and noticed Virginia Beach has a crane!!! One whole crane!!!

At least something is going up!  I remember that Virginia Beach doesn't even have a downtown with any significant buildings but it's still a cool place right by the ocean!

The parking :tw_tired:

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't most of what you see in that shot that appear to be parking lots are actually car dealerships?  Granted I'd be glad when those are gone equally as much as most surface parking lots.

You’re correct, but it all looks the same from above.

Pictures like this one (nice shot) and the one Mark posted last Friday (last page) always make me long for projects that can/will close the gap between the old cbd and Sobro.  That's one of my biggest dreams for downtown.

Am I the only one who still thinks that the Westin was a huge missed opportunity? An ugly building that always looks like it's missing teeth plopped on a low-rise block-filling pedestal....
