Looking at this shot had me reflecting on the original cbd circa the late 80's which was the last time I spent time there.  Oh how you've grown.  And to think this frame doesn't include the cluster in the original Sobro.  Keep eating your vegetables Nashville!  As Azarat said, when those NY and area towers fill in,...

I wish AT&T would remove that ugly corporate logo. A friend and I were discussing that when we looked at it on Sunday. Or maybe just leave the globe.

If they left the globe are we getting to close to the Eye of Sauron? haha

Russia scraps plan for Eye of Sauron art installation ...

Let's be honest, AT&T is already an all seeing eye anyways haha

Like that second picture, lighting is crucial for a great city vibe. And I for one don’t buy into that light pollution thinking, when your in NYC, Singapore, Las Vegas, etc. the lights of night make a difference. It’s a city not a rural farm area! That’s what Montana is for ha ha !

I’ve always thought the current sign looks tacky and an afterthought.

100%! Amazon has the right idea. Discreet corporate presence. That said, the Bridgestone signage is artistic, so it can be done well. Most other signage downtown is at least not incompatible with the building.

Oddball question: what's the newest building that's been demolished for new construction in Nashville? (For example Greer Stadium (1978) and Starwood Amphitheater (1986) don't count, because they haven't been replaced with anything.

Is it the LifeWay Tower (1990)?

That's probably correct. I was thinking one of the fastest construction to demo projects was the Church Street Center mall. It lasted less than a decade (circa 1989-1998) before being replaced by the new library. It's a shame the building couldn't have been reconfigured, but I recall reading that the floors would not be able to handle the weight of the books(!)

That was an interesting read, but in my opinion it's more fair to give the honor to the first modern skyscraper constructed, not concepted. That was the Lever House at 390 Park Avenue in NYC, designed by SOM's Gordon Bunshaft and built in 1952. It still looks very timely despite its age.

The Twitter thread mentions Mies's Seagram Building, built in 1958, which is actually across the street from the Lever House. Interesting story about it: NYC's 1916 Zoning Resolution, the first of its kind in America, was commonly interpreted by architects as requiring tiered setbacks - they would keep their building from breaking the "sky plane" by setting it back every 100-200 feet. With the Seagram Building Mies determined the final setback amount needed for the full height of the building and kept the entire facade at that setback, creating a large public plaza in front of the building. City officials loved the design so much that they began allowing bonus height for creating public space, which has now become common practice all over the country.

I have always read the first skyscraper built was in Chicago.  (Edit)  I see you said first "modern" one.  Gotcha.
