Myrtle Beach getting its own NBC affiliate

That is sad indeed, I think WMBF should have retained WIS-TV's Noon and 7pm news on their station at least since WMBF doesn't have newscasts at those times...

They've never had an affiliate of their own, it's always been WIS-Columbia, WECT-Wilmington and WCBD-Charleston.

It's too bad that cable systems are so market-strict now. In the city of Myrtle Beach itself, only WIS and WECT are carried (until today), south of Myrtle Beach you can get WCBD on cable. Most of the cable systems along the grand strand are now Time-Warner except in Conway where there is still the local HTC.

Interestingly enough, WMBF's Digital over-the-air signal only covers a portion of the market.

Anyway, WMBF signs on this morning at 7:00 am with Today.

It appears that WMBF will not be broadcasting an analog signal so it becomes the first station in the state to broadcast an all digital signal. This may be due in part to the fact the FCC has decided that Wilmington will be the first TV market in the country to go all digital. The analog transmissions there will be switched off in early September. It's also broadcasting "Weather Plus" on a secondary channel.

Aside from that WMBF is one of the very few stations in the Carolinas to broadcast its local news in HD.
