Son of a b!tch I now have to pick up my brother at the train station in friggen Kingston of all places at 5:45. I was gonna bring pastries and everything...

Your brother should just take the commuter rail to Providence, oh... wait...

Does he mind waiting 2 years?

Stop by after you pick him up, make him wait in the car (don't forget to roll the window down a little like a parent at Foxwoods) and see if we're still around.

I'm not happy about this but I can't go. Is there going to be any sort of second meeting between this one and Providence Tomorrow?

Actually, on second thought, what time do you think you'll be there till?

We were there pretty late, almost 11 I think. Long enough for the waitress to pour about 7 or 8 rounds of water, after we were done drinking.

i'm home with pukey flu today. hope you guys got it all sorted out.

Hmm, well, we missed you. Then again, I guess it wouldn't do for the rest of us to be sick with your flu on Wednesday and you be the only person here well enough to show up.

Garris took copious notes and will be posting some thoughts we had to the forum. We will be meeting around 5pm at RWP on Wednesday ahead of the Providence Tomorrow workshop. Garris had some insight into the workshop he'll share. Basically, it will be more informational about the process and how it will unfold over the coming months and less participatory. There will be a survey to fill out, and supposedly a time for people to break down into groups. But it won't be a sleeves rolled up getting down to it type of gathering. Those coming later in the charrette process. So depending on how the workshop goes, we may actually be able to turn it into a meeting.

and there will be ice cream. although the thought of ice cream right now is so not appealing.

Yes, it was a great meeting on Friday.

Sorry for my delay in posting meeting notes. It was a brutal weekend of work... I'll post the meeting notes (and the embryologic plans to start the urban advocacy group) later.

Regarding the Providence Tomorrow meeting coming up on Wednesday, two members of the planning department were there to explain the process to the Wayland Square meeting last week. Wednesday's gathering will be mostly educational to explain how this process works, what charettes are (they are desperately trying to come up with a more digestable name for the sessions), and when the charettes will be.

While there will be some breakdown groups at the end and some questionaires to fill out (for example, "What do you like most about Providence?" type of questionaires), it very much sounds like the Wednesday meeting will not be a big feedback forum. In fact, the location of the event in RW Park, the ice cream, etc are all attempts by the planning department to engage the type of Providence citizen who usually wouldn't come to such planning events (not people like wacko Fox Point tree ladies, government wonks, and, well... us).

As Cotuit mentioned, this will be a nice opportunity to get a primer on how the planning process will work and perhaps even have an impromptu UP meeting, but this doesn't appear to be the forum to get all hot and fired up about bringing specific issues to public attention.

where at RWP are you all meeting up tomorrow? i'm definitely going, but i won't be able to be there for 5 as my fiancee won't be home until 5, but we're heading down right after she gets home.

Right around the casino somewhere. Or in the casino. I'll post a 'what I'm wearing' tomorrow for people who haven't met me, others can just find each other I guess.

I'll be hopping a bus, and won't be there at 5 on the dot exactly.

I'm wearing a black t-shirt and tan cargo shorts today. I'll also have my blue/orange messenger bag. And I'll look hung over.

i'll be looking for you... not sure what i'll be wearing because i'll most likely change after work (we have a dress code here  ), but probably a black PC polo and olive cargo shorts.

So much for me being the UP drunk...

I get to attend a lovely meeting at the New Bedford Zoo tonight so I can't make it (of course).

the kickoff event was fun and interesting. one, it was nice to actually meet people since i have yet to make it to an actual meeting. two, it was interesting seeing all the different types of people interested in this and just how much people absolutely love providence and wish to see it succeed. however, i think they need to do something like this for other issues of the city besides planning and development, like schools, youth programs, etc. soemthing like this for youth issues would be a great thing for teh city. i think taht's one of the biggest issues facing providence... what to do with the youth problems (crime, poverty, education, activities, involvement, etc).

it was nice to hear that there's a group to start addressing this... youth voices (or young voices or something like that).

It was people from every neighborhood, every race, every income bracket, every age... Everyone was represented. It was very good to see, and the turnout was literally overwhelming. They were expecting around a hundred people, and planned for 150 just in case. The crowd far exceeded that, there was a line out the door of people waiting to sign in. They had to open a second room and move people to the second floor. Very good kick off, and very positive remarks.

I think they're going to have to do that. So much that was discussed was way far more specific than this actual process is designed to address. There's a desire and willingness for people from different backgrounds to meet and try to make things better for all of us, it's amazing to see and certainly needs to be fostered and followed up on.

the only complaint i had about the whole event was the presentation of the completed exercises. my fiancee had made a comment that they should have had us all turn in the sheets and had a few people put together big lists for the group as a whole while we got ice cream and ate it and then presented a summary of what the larger group came up with.

i was very impressed by the younger people there. i couldn't believe that so many people care so much about making a difference and making providence better. i hope there is an off shoot of this for the younger people in the city.
