Providence Tomorrow

there is one week left to the public comment on line portion of the comprehensive plan, so i suggest folks take some time this week/weekend to make sure that their voice is heard. The planning dept and the CPC really do see every single comment made. In other threads folks have complained that there often doesn't seem to be any vision for the future in the city--this is where we can make "vision."

FYI - the CPC Public Hearing originally scheduled for tomorrow has been moved to May 8th.

So who wants to wager on how many people will be standing around outside the Meeting Street School tomorrow? This is a little late notice.

Unfortunately I won't be able to go now as that is the same night as the Greater City: Exchange meeting.

Thanks. Has the comment period been extended also?

I just want to know what we are going to do about the Parking Crisis Downcity. I mean where's FEMA?

From the transcript of the May 30th CPC meeting:

The last time we did a count on parking spaces, if my memory is correct, was something like 28,000 spaces in what we call downtown.

When is it gonna be tomorrow already?

Providence City Council is looking ahead to waaaaay beyond tomorrow:

From the October 29, 2007, Committee on Urban Redevelopment, Renewal and Planning Agenda:

Resolution Requesting the City Council to establish a Panel of Futurists to Envision Life in Providence in Twenty, Fifty and One Hundred Years.

Providence URRP Committee -October 29, 2007 06:00 PM

You can't accuse City Council of a lack of strategic thinking.

RISD did something like this back when Joe Doorley was mayor (Remember, kids, before you were born!). The Sunday Journal magazine section (Remember, kids?) featured all kinds of crazy, beautiful ideas. I waited for comments from Joe or the city council. I must have been looking the wrong way, because I found only a great silence in return.

RISD is pretty good at pipe dreams that way. Most colleges are, because after they construct all these lofty visions, they aren't really responsible for implementing what they come up with. I would tend to place the latest Comprehensive Plan in a somewhat more pragmatic frame of mind; I think the concept behind it is a tad more realistic.
