Can I just say that I have fallen in love with Filomena Lupo. I have no idea who she is but she is SO nice, and she took a week of vacation from work just to go to the charrettes. She got a nice round of a place at one of the sessions. Love her!

That's the first time I've ever heard anyone say THAT.....

ctman from the Connecticut forum posted some of his photos of Baltimore here, I wanted to point out some good signs in those photos:

Great sign showing directions to transit. We obviously don't have a metro or light rail (yet), but it points to the idea of creating wayfinding signs for pedestrians:

"Pay Here," seems pretty clear to me:

Overhead street sign. I'd like it to be prettied up a bit, but certainly needed in Providence:

Wow, lettering that is not completely faded, one sign that clearly states the rules (instead of three different signs with three different and competing instructions), large and easy to read without being detrimental to the visual environment:

Not signage, but notable for another reason. Baltimore has no hurricane barrier, yet they don't fear building on the waterfront. Providence is the capital of the Ocean State, yet we lack a waterfront area, sad:

Urban big box store:

What, a parking garage that lists it's rates at the entrance? INCONCEIVABLE!

Glad my pictures could help...

I havent read through this whole section but I can tell a little bit about those Baltimore pics I took...

Urban Big Box Store: That building where the Best Buy is located is an office building located at the Inner Harbor. There is currently a Best Buy there and soon a Whole Foods will be opening up there. It was interesting to see a mid size city incorporate a big box store into an urban area (as opposed to NYC which has been doing it for quite some time...there are countless Staples for example in Midtown)

The parking meters: Those systems where everything is on one machine were very helpful. They had them in Baltimore and in Ocean City, Maryland. All I had to do was pay and it printed out a ticket that I put on my car. It also helped the streets look much nicer because there werent hundreds of old falling over parking meters

Overhead Street Sign: That pic is from N. Charles Street which is a major north south street in the city. It starts by the Inner Harbor and travels straight uptown through the CBD and into the Mt Vernon Cultural District. These signs signified the crossing streets...similar to a NYC situation.

I stated that earlier, if we could fix the street lights and street signs, so everything is uniform and easy to read and understand the cities driving would improve so much.

I don't know if I would post this here, but I thought at some point paying parking meters were discontinued, then sometims I see them completely broken apart so that you can't feed money, other times I see those new boxes where it accounts for a certain amount of spots. I also see working meters either always flashing red, or sometimes paid into, what exactly is the deal?

i'm not sure if there's a parking thread, but this could go in downcity topics.

anyways, i'll respond here and let cotuit move the posts where he sees fit. paying parking meters are still all over the downtown area. i don't know where else, but at least along the east side of empire and where broadway splits to fountain and sabin, they have the new meter boxes that you put the money into (or use a special parking card) and it prints out a ticket that you put on your dashboard which shows the time you are paid until. they might also have these on greene st. you only have to pay during the week until 6 (or whatever the sign says), but i think they stop ticketing at 5 and they don't ticket on weekends even though the signs only say "except sundays and holidays".

Thanks, I just found it really confusing, because one time I paid a meter and I realized everyone else's were flashing red, and npon of them had tickets... so I just wasn't sure if there were any actual rules or regulations.

there are rules and regulations, but they are very loosely enforced. i missed the report last night on the news about the worst streets for tickets. if you paid the meter on a weekend, you were duped by the loosely worded signage, which would explain why all the others were red.

as for those blue box meters, they suck. some won't take coins at certain times, the instructions aren't all that easy to follow, and they should at the very least accept dollar bills in addition to coins and the parking card.

Any idea if the same goes for the metered spots on Francis across from the train station? I only see a car here and there that has paid on the weekends.

I was theorizing that the city doesn't want to deter people from coming downtown on the weekends, so they don't bother ticketing.

the city does not ticket at all on weekends... as long as you're parked in a legit space.

Its funny cause the only time I got a ticket, they wrote it out horribly wrong, I own a silver mazda3. the ticket said white mazda3, but then my license plate is DG-10*---> dont steal my identity now  and they wrote down DG-295, and i dont understand how that gets messed up that bad...

i hope you didn't pay it... because they certainly had no way of tracking you down (they use the plate #, and you'd probably be able to argue it out claiming that your car is a different color).

of course I didn't pay it, I just didn't understand how they could of possibly messed up that bad, was it on purpose? or did the officer just lack some type of skills?

or did someone with that car description take it from their windshield and put it on your car in hopes that you would pay it?
