Business Journal article:

Inc. ranks KC 29th among best cities for doing business

Kansas City ranks No. 29 among 67 large U.S. cities on Inc. Magazine's list of the best cities for doing business.

Atlanta ranks No. 1 on the list, which is in the magazine's March issue.

The magazine compiled the list using three-month rolling averages of state and area unadjusted employment data from the U.S. Department of Labor's Bureau of Labor Statistics from January 1993 to September 2003. The data reflect the new North American Industry Classification System categories, including total nonfarm employment, manufacturing, financial services, business and professional services, educational and health services, information, retail and wholesale trade, transportation and utilities, leisure and hospitality, and government, the magazine said in a written statement.

Large cities are defined as those with a nonfarm employment base of at least 450,000 jobs. Medium cities range from 150,000 to 450,000 jobs. Small cities have as many as 150,000 jobs.

The complete list is on the magazine's Web site.
