East Carroll Parish is the 3rd smallest and poorest parish in the state. It actually has a higher African-American population percentage than New Orleans. Link

Ahhh over there! I knew that name sounded familiar. I get the 'East and West' parishes mixed up... except East and West baton Rouge, of course, since their names give them away.

Interesting topics yall.

Yeah Transylvania's water tower was pretty cool with a giant bat painted up there. Blink your eye and your out that place.

Talk about depressing, the parish seat of East Carrol, Lake Providence was just that. Downtown was a boarded-up ghost town. Very poor area.

I wonder what those pre-Katrina poulation figures are now for Jefferson, Orleans, and EBR ?

I have no idea what EBR would be right now, but here are the 3 parish's from GNO:

Orleans- 235,000-250,000

Jefferson- 460,000

Saint Tammany- 296,000

Nice post. I like looking at the comparable population numbers.

Impressive to see that Texas Top 5 is also the Top 5 on the entire list. I know the numbers don't reflect it, but I have been to these cities and still have hard time thinking that Austin and Fort Worth are larger than New Orleans.

Also interesting to see that Arkansas and Mississippi largest cities would only be the 4th largest city if it were in Louisiana.

That all goes back to the density of New Orleans-Metaire-Kenner. While New Orleans itself is much smaller than either Fort Worth or Austin, neither of those two cities compare to the entire Southshore of Lake Ponchartrain in terms of density. When you're driving around New Orleans, it seems huge, and this is mainly because there are about 1.2 million people just in this highlighted area:

New Orleans-Baton Rouge to become metro region?

Population growth models show that Lake Ponchartrain will be ringed by five cities, which will be closely together. Development on the I-10/I-12 corridor will be a major factor in the next few decades and planners need to take into account when designing communities and projects

The next logical step is commuter rail b/t the two cities that is quick and affordable.
