Norfolk International Airport

Just for the record Raleigh is not a hub.

Actually, American is slowly rebuilding their non-stop service out of RDU. They now have non-stop service to Austin, Boston, Columbus OH, Hartford CT, Kansas City MO, Louisville KY, Newark NJ, JFK and LGA, and Reagan -- all in addition to flights to their hubs of Miami, DFW, STL and O'Hare -- and the non-stop to London Gatwick that they never stopped. Don't know if that qualifies as a hub, but hubs as a business model are heavily discredited, because they lead to inefficient use of aircraft. Too much time sitting around waiting for the other flights. SWA has a 20% better daily utilization because they don't use a hub and spoke system.

One of the smartest people I have ever known works in scheduling at American -- you can't believe how sophisticated their computer aids are. A fascinating business, taking those fungible assets called aircraft and figuring out how to employ them to yield the maximum amount of revenue on any given day.

Interesting read on the end of this service from the other side of the pond (Link)

Nothing major, but Norfolk no longer has a non-stop to Nashville as Southwest stopped that service.

On the plus side, Southwest will add a daily direct flight from Norfolk to Tampa Bay beginning June 17.

The Norfolk Admirals might use that one a few times next season...

The rumor I am hearing at BNA is that the flight will be back when they get more aircraft. Nashville, being one of Southwest's Focus Cities, allows Norfolk fliers good connectability without having to fool with hassles at larger airports. Supposedly that has played into the decision to bring it back. That and the military presence in Norfolk of course. Did they market this flight in Norfolk any when it was running??

Norfolk gains Nashville as a new daily non-stop city now!

http://www.southwest.com/about_swa/press/080109_chart.pdf

Southwest will begin flying the route soon. There is military traffic between the two cities plus Nashville offers around 84 daily departures on Southwest. Which this give Norfolk travelers another choice in connecting to west coast cities and beyond. Plus, it give Nashville travelers direct access to a great summer getaway!

Thanks for this news! I was wondering when Southwest would add Nashville again.

Norfolk International Airport is calling for a parallel runway but the FAA says that ORF doesn't need it , but by 2012 Newport News Airport will have a third runway . I also read that ORF 9001 ft runway its too small for a Boeing 747 , but PHF 8000 ft runway is long enough for an Airbus A380.

To answer their question though, 9000ft runways are more than enough for a 747 to land and takeoff on loaded fully. To be honest, a fully loaded 747 can land safely on 7500ft of runway.
