St. Paul Travelers

Interesting to say the least. Does the Courant know something we don't?

Return Of The Umbrella?

That would be great if the umbrella came back... I want to see it back up on the Travelers Plaza Building next to the Travelers logo where it belongs...

Watching the US Open it was cool to see all the Travelers commercials but it would have been great if they got rid of that ugly little shield and the famous red umbrella was back...

The announcement I'm waiting for is when they say they really are moving the headquarters back to Hartford. It would fit this pattern of news though. I am cautiously optimistic that there are plans in the works for them to return the company to where it belongs.

Tycoon, unfortunately, one gets the feeling that a guy like Perez is useless when dealing with these large corporations. A strong mayor behind the scenes could help facilitate such a move. But all we see from Perez is agitating corporations at the behest of unions. Hartford reallly needs the mayor to grow up.

I understand and respect how you feel. However, I do know him personally and know he has the city's best interests at heart. If there is anyway to get Travelers back, I know he's looked into it. It's not just service workers who he stands up for. What about all of the white collar folks at Travelers Life who's jobs he saved or at least extended. You guys are really too hard on him. I don't like the union stuff either, but he can't turn his back on a fundraising source. Politics is a business, I manage a campaign now, and without union support our funding would not be the same. We are all on the same page about the mess at the convention center having to be cleaned up, I will not start condemning the mayor for a few things while overall his track record has been one of accomplishment. I only really know of one major issue involving a union where I think he should change his tactics and that's with Waterford. Other than that, his union support has been fine. I agree with his actions at the Hilton and other than that what has there been? You guys are taking one issue and turning it into his track record on Business. That's not fair. His office helped convince Insurity Inc. to set up their headquarters in Coltsville and convinced WFSB to stay in Hartford, initially. He latched on to the new Arena and NHL idea from the onset and has been side by side with Larry G. trying to get a hockey team back up here. He's been as tough as we are on the slacking developers over at the Bond and still is Hartford's most visible booster. Just for perspective.

I totally agree. All Perez does is allienate corperations with his stupid union support.

You guys have the right to feel how you feel, but he's a good guy doing a good job. I am closer to all of this than all of you and I have more perspective on it, not to sound high and mighty or anything. I mean, Hartford did not get into this mess overnight, it was 50 years in the making. Hartford has only gotten better since Perez has been in office. He's the only mayor in recent memory to even lead in the right direction. Like I've said, I know the man. It would take a lot more for him to lose my support.

Come now, it's not quite a black hole. It's still the most important city in the state. I don't care what anyone says. Politically and Economically CT's Economy is tied to Hartford. The Casinos are still dwarfed compared to our corporations in terms of taxes to the state and job creation. We do have to keep Hartford up. Really we need more state money around here if you ask me. We are the one stuck as a social services center with far too much tax exempt land. Now I'm not saying SE CT shouldn't be getting more of the Casino money, but we definately are not a black hole. When all is said and done the state will be pleased with the investment in Hartford.

Tycoon:

What I mean is this ---- why would a company go to a high tax place then to a low tax place? If you had a place where there's no income tax, would you move there? You would! I think CT politicans should realize that a headquarters of a million dollar corporation could be anywhere - including in a home office now.

The state needs to move into the 21st century - and it needs to reduce SPENDING and TAXES! The Travelers would move to Florida (They got a big operation here in Tampa) since Florida has no income taxes.

Pigs will fly before Travelers moves to Florida. I don't want to live in Florida, I don't care about not having income taxes. I'll manage and have my CT quality of life. That's what I'm paying for. Really Florida is a mess, look at the schools, look at the crime in all of their cities. They make CT Cities all look like small new england towns. I think Orlando has already passed, in June, Hartford's number of Homocides for all of last year. And that is Orlando, Florida's "safe" city. Miami and Jax are out of control. Not to mention that they actually have a high degree of "stranger" murder in Florida where we mostly have acquantance violence. To me, there's a world of difference between the two. They are behind CT in every category I care about. A company from Plainville was just going to move their HQ and all of the employees to Florida, until the employees all revolted and said they would not go to Florida and move their families, mostly due to the poor public schools.

Insurer Adding 600 Jobs

St. Paul Travelers Plans Major Growth Locally

July 25, 2006

By DIANE LEVICK, Courant Staff Writer In a boon to the Insurance City, The St. Paul Travelers Cos. plans to add about 500 jobs in Hartford and more than 100 others in Windsor, and is launching a major office renovation and expansion project to house the growing workforce.

With business and profits growing, the insurer is expected to add the jobs over the next two years and to put some employees in a sixth downtown location - the landmark Gold Building at One Financial Plaza

The Connecticut Development Authority approved $2 million in state sales tax relief last week on materials and equipment that Travelers will need for its expansion and renovation program.

I read this this morning and now I will have a good day. Not only is an employer adding well paying jobs to the state of CT but the bulk of these jobs are being added to Hartford. Another good thing is Travelers will be using more office space...using more of the downtown office towers which makes a lower vacancy rate.

Also MScript Inc. a Waterbury based technology company plans to open an office downtown as well as in Stamford.....not the 600 jobs Travelers is bringing but every one counts.

And in June's Hartford Magazine there were a bunch of pictures from a celebration at Crush for the openining of Boston based Regan Communication Group's Hartford office called Regan Hartford.

So slowly Hartford is finally getting some jobs back....and every single one counts. It is not just about the big new buildings but it is about every single new store, restaurant or job that gets brought to Hartford.

Channel 3 just interviewed yours truly on the same thing. It's obvioulsy a nice welcoming news. But I forgot to mention bring back the Whalers. Damn. It should air sometime today, but I don't know when.

Cool, you're gonna be on TV! I'll be sure to watch when I get home!

No Whalers reference? That's it, you owe me one Vanilla Steamer if I ever get over to your fine establishment...

Madvlad I was disappointed that you didn't make it to the meet. We all were looking for you...

Hey Bill, I just saw you on the 6:00PM news. It looks like you got some nice exposure for JoJo's. :D

JoJo's is a great place and will become a big hangout when Sage Allen apartments open. What is going into the store next door?

Good point. If I lived in either Sage Allen or H21 I'd be stopping by JoJo's everyday for a cup of coffee or a snack. I'm planning on moving downtown within the next 2 to 4 years, I just wish it could be sooner.

i'd imagine jojos must get decent business when capital community college is in session. sage allen will be more of a boon to biz than h21. starbucks and dnd are right there next to h21. living in trumbull on the park, i 've found it quicker to go to one of those 2 than up to pratt st....not to say i don't when i have some extra time :)

i'd imagine converting the aa building to condos won't hurt biz either...

I would venture to guess that Travelers was "unnamed corporation" talked about in today's Courant editorial about Front Street. Travelers (or whomever) was looking into more office space and wanted offices on Front Street, but now has agreed to lease a portion of the gold building. It especially seems to make sense with the walkway Travelers has been building to Front Street- actually to nowhere at the moment. Although an office tower would be nice, I hope they can now focus on what front street was supposed to be all along- mixed use retail, entertainment and residential.
