Grand Openings & project Completion Dates

I'd recommend separating things out like restaurant openings from the projects list and put them in a separate "business openings" list or something like that. It's making the projects list a bit tough to follow and, well, perhaps cheapens it a bit (equating, say, a lunch place opening with a 500 foot tower...).

what about the good old casino :D... if actually does pass do they have any kind of dates or anything?

and how about the Browns Vision of the future stuff?

when the casino doesn't pass, it will just have to be removed, so might as well wait on that.

are there any current major developments for brown (like the new life sciences building) or just a lot of small stuff?

Brown's planning to building hundreds of thousands of square feet over the next decade or so. Some will be adjacant to the Sydney Frank Science Bldg where the gas station used to be. There's also a preliminary plan for a new performing arts center. And they are definitely eyeing the 195 land.

At the same time, they are trying to divest themselves of a lot of the small scale formerly residential properties on College Hill by selling them to Brown community homebuyers at reasonable prices.

Add new athletic buildings to the list built on the current surface parking as well.

I have no idea what the timeframe of all of this is, though...

Save for the new Biomed Building, I can't say any of Brown's recent architecture has blown me away. Some other Ivys (Yale being a great example) have finally done some really nice, new architecture of late, as has (arguably) MIT.

It's time for Brown to step it up a notch...

Definitely a valid criticism of Brown's architecture since the 60s. Amazingly lackluster for the most part. Light years behind Yale, MIT etc. The exception might be the Watson Center by Rafael Vinoly and I too don't mind the new Life Science (Frank) building although it does loom over Thayer St. in an ungainly way.

As for Ctownmickey's question, I doubt it. The segment of the architectural profession that Brown gravitates to frowns on historicism. An exception, however, is the addition to the John Carter Brown library on George St.

If you can get me more accurate info on any project (even a link that I can read through) I'll add it to the list. I do need the expected completion date since thats the purpose of the list. I'm also trying to stay away from any rumors. Proposed, announced, and/or in progress projects only for now!!

Not too important, but unless the powers that be are feeding me gobbletygook, the Wickenden bathhouse project should be done during the summer, rather than in December. Can we bump up the date to August 2007, to help keep their feet to the fire?

see edited list - done...

Will Brown ever build in the style of its historic buildings?? whatever style that is..

Why, the good style, of course!

I'm not sure Brown has a historic style. Their campus, more than most Ivys, is kind of a mish-mash of different buildings. Their largest and best known buildings would be, what, neo-colonial institutional?

I just hope that whatever they do next is attractive and has some integrity, whatever style they choose...
