YES!! Finally South Providence/Lower Elmwood will have a hang!

We have been working our butts off for the past 8 months to rennovate and repair the old 1947 Worcseter lunch car diner at 777 Elmwood Ave, across the street from the RIPTA garages and just down the block from Roger Willams Park & Zoo

The place will be called The Liberty Elm and will not only be a coffeeshop, juice bar and light cafe, but outdoors will also be a garden center surrounding the outdoor seating, where seasonal bedding plants and produce will be for sale. Free wireless internet inside.

Our mission is to buy local and support local RI farmers, growers and producers. We've done as much as were able with green building materials, we'll be recycling and composting our coffee grinds, fruit, vegetable and paper trash. And to top it offf, we're initiating a program called "1% for Trees" whereby 1% of our profits after taxes will go toward the purchase of Libery Elm Tree stock from the Elm Research Institute in New Hampshere, where for every one tree we purchase, 6 will be donated to the City of Providence for re-treeing and re-greening our neighborhoods and replacing the majestic American elms that once lined Elmwood Avenue.

We have wall space for local artists, and we will be having LIVE music (yes - not only visual artists need support and love, don't forget!)

Our projected opening is April 2007 (possibly early May depending on the final inspections.

Hope you will all support us in our attempt!

Thanks -

Carol (kip) and Tink

Great news. Probably the best thing to happen on Elmwood Avenue since the Elmwood Theater, Inskip Motors, Elmwood Dodge, Tasca Ford and Mc Kendalls Lumber moved or closed on that part of Elmwood Avenue.

Thanks for being so supportive. We hope we can make a success of it. The capacity is 48: 12 stools at the old diner counter (which I'm guessing will be occupied mainly by the bus drivers who have been begging us to open sooner rather than later--believe me, we've been trying! (they're sick of DD and eating off the truck), and a back room with tables, chairs, a couch etc. This is where we'll be able to have some live music and there is a decent amount of wall space for exhibits. We'll also have some outdoor seating in the warmer weather.

By all means, feel free to consider it as a gathering/meeting place. We hope it will also become a place for organizing volunteers for neighborhood clean ups, greening projects, etc., and would also like to have presentations about urban wildlife (we've got some wonderful red tail hawks in Elmwood these days), and a good amount of off street parking as the lot size is nearly 10,000 sq. ft.

Will keep you all posted. Feel free to drive by and say hi while we finish up renovations. If I get a chance I'll post some before and after pics. The inside of the place was a real mess (grease, dirt, nests of all sorts, fryolaters sitting filled with cooking oil for 3 years while the place lay closed), and the exterior of the diner car itself was covered with T-111 plywood. We've removed it and now have the job trying to bondo and paint the damage. Also put on a new roof - with an environmentally friendly, white roofing material made from US-grown soybeans.

We're excited and hope with the proposed re-paving/re-treeing of Elmwood Ave. that a decent bike path and safe pedestrian walkways leading to one of our city's most beautiful natural resources - Roger Williams Park - will begin to make Elmwood Avenue a human-friendly place once again.

Thanks again!

PS - We'll have a BYOB policy for the time being. 801 Liquors just down the block has a decent selection of stuff and is run by a most wonderful Cambodian couple who deserve the business. They work hard and are extremely friendly and sincere to everyone. Some really nice folks around the neighborhood which is very diverse.

I would add the "RIH Bridge Building Expansion," and put it as "March 2009?" since it's starting at the exact same time as the WIH Expansion... I'll try to check a confirmation date.

In the "still need" or a future projects without dates section, I'd put "Brown Medical School" since the talk is still of constructing a new building, not renovating one of the ones in the JD for that project...

- Garris

PS: Again, I'd push the Wayland Sq condos back to June 2010 right now since they have yet to break ground.

Is anyone going to talk about the giant addition to Women & Infants that is shooting up? The big steel frame you can see from 95 and 195? It's got to be the most stealth project in the city.

I'll go look again, but I think the steel frame you're seeing is the Rhode Island Hospital Bridge Building Expansion, which is moving along at an absolute light speed rivaling the Chase Center and, you're right, is happening quite under the radar. I don't think the WIH work is visible yet.

The three story steel expansion is nearly fully outlined atop the existing three stories, making this (already somewhat unattractive building) quite visible from everywhere.

I'll snap some photos Wednesday.

That must be it, I took some photos of it the other day from Providence Piers (they are still in my camera) and I noticed this afternoon that it is quite visible from 195 as well.
