The Banking Industry in the Triad

I live in Southside, so I am aware of whats happening there. I said earlier that most of the growth downtown has been residential. I do anticipate there will be some small compaines relocating to downtown, but I don't think downtown will ever grow in height beyond what it is now. I wish downtown was booming with economic activity like Charlotte. I think it would be exciting to see all the new skyscrapers going up. Like I has said in earlier post, most new compaines coming to the Traid will be around the airport area. If downtown was located just of the interstate, like Charlotte and Winston-Salem, it would probably be more attractive to potential companies. The location of dt Greensboro is kind of off the beaten path.

Was it the recent lunar eclipse that brought on all this negativity? Come on guys! This sounds like the age-old war between Greensboro and Winston-Salem! I though we had matured and moved beyond the stone-age! Let's get back on the original topic of this thread.

so you are going to ignore the fact that more office jobs are coming downtown? I dont understand all the negativity towards Greensboro. even when facts stare people in the face, they still believe the very opposite. I guess we have to ignore the fact that two 5-story office building are being proposed. we have to ignore that fact that Carolina Bank is moving its operations from the suburbs to a new headquarters building downtown. We also have to ignore the businesses near the airport that are moving downtown.

"This is a real surge," said Rob Johnston, president of Johnston Properties. "This expansion just goes to show that this is a viable commercial district. People want to be downtown."

"The three companies say their decisions confirm their optimism about downtown and show that growth has begun to spread throughout the center city.

"It's a growing viable location," said Kelly Paul, marketing specialist at SunTrust. "There's a lot of new things happening. It's not just on Elm Street."

Here is a rendering of the Carolina Bank HQ for DT Greensboro. It is not easy to tell from the picture, but it looks like a 5 story building to me! I'm hearing that demolishion of the Arbor House Condo model is set to begin in late May with construction on the bank to begin in late summer.

I'd scrap the entire design, not just the roof, but then again this is simply an elevation and so rudimentary looking that I find it hard to believe this is the actual design. Agreed with Twin that this looks like your basic suburban office park building to which no one gives a second thought. Wouldn't there be some kind of regulations requiring more than this (from a design standpoint) when built in the CBD?

Absolutely hideous. This is a suburban one story building that has been S-T-R-E-T-C-H-E-D to pretend it is an urban building. Somebody, please find the architect and steal their pencils.

1. A hip roof? Are there any of these in downtown Greensboro on a building over 4 stories? At least slap a cupola up there or something.

2. The entranceway insults the pedestrian by making them feel tiny, abandoning human scale by putting the top of the entrance portico up to the base of the 4th floor. Such a move might work with a building of much greater scale, say over 20 stories, but it is abrupt, unnecessary, and just bizarre here.

3. What's with the three columns with spaces on the left end? My Guess? DRIVE-THRU Tellers. Downtown. Good Lord.

4. Notice how the entranceway is not in the center of the building, but the center of the building that is not marred by drive-through alleys. Notice how the symmetry of a building that has the potential to be a grand edifice in downtown has proportion sacrificed in order to let people stay in their cars.

I know cityboi and others are going to say I'm harsh but really, it's so easy to do better than this pathetic, lazy structure. Architects from the first 30 years of the 20th century would roll over with laughter at this building and kick the creator out of their professional associations.

I'm very excited about the Carolina Bank HQ moving downtown. However, I could have come up with a much better urban looking building. Let me point out that the source from which I got this rendering did not advise me of this being the final draft. So there is still hope that some "major" changes could still be made in the design. We can only hope!

yeah, if an architect actually designed that sad piece of work, i would be surprised. but there is a huge problem with architecture in general all around the country right now. if you look at all the projects going on in the country, there are only a handfull of buildings that have any originality to them at all.
